View Full Version : Curb lighting and adaptive Xenons

So a while back I realised that my allroad does not have fog lights at the front. Folks here explained that they don't fit them if you have adaptive bi-xenons cos the lights have a foul weather mode that provides the 'same' functionality as the fog lights do.
I've read about the fog lights being used to illuminate the 'curb' (or whatever you are turning into) - when you are turning sharply at low speeds with dipped beam on (and lights set to auto I think). Great idea.
What surprised me is that my car also manages to do side illumination. Obviously it is not using the fog lights so I am wondering if there is another 'shutter' in the headlamp that can be opened for the side illumination... it comes on very 'quickly' (so I don't think it is swiveling headlights) and is very bright.
Anyone got any idea how it's doing it?

I think the side illumination is what you write about in your second paragraph. Having set this in vcds, when I turn right into my drive, it illuminates the right hand side to quite a great extent. I find this more useful that I had originally thought. This illumination is the same as when I use (infrequently) the bad weather mode.

Is there a light under the wing mirror?

It appears further forward than that, and just in your periphery. I assumed it was fog lights until someone pointed out there are none.

This is taken from the Audi self learning guide. Apparently the static cornering bulb is a 55w H7

WOW so basically a motorcycle class (dipped beam) halogen for 'static cornering'. That would explain why it is quite bright and comes on instantly.
Thanks johnsimcox!

Comes on instanly, do you really mean that it lights immediately, without gradually increasing? My all-weather lights as a cornering light starts gradually, and dims even more with fading effect when you straighten the steering. I replaced btw the standard bulb with 4500K bulb, which is more white and looks nicer.

Is this conering function available without the 'adaptive' option added to xenon lights that are standard from S Line spec? Just to confirm, this needs enabeling using VCDS, yes?

Mine has activated by VCDS, no adaptive lights. Also coming home lights can be programmed to use fog/allweather lights instead of main beam, to save xenons.

Hmmm you got me thinking now. I THINK it comes on pretty instantly - certainly you don't get the fading up that you see as Xenon's warm up when you switch them on initially. To be honest I've not driven the car much at night / in the dark (yet) but was just very conscious that it did have curb lighting when I arrived home late the other evening.
I did not need to have this messed with in VCDS, it was enabled 'out of the box'... MY2014 allroad

I have this on my Insignia, it doesn't use the xenons, it has a seperate light bulb in each unit set at 90 degrees so it shines sideways. This comes on when the steering wheel is turned almost fully to either side, only that side comes on. But it has adaptive too.
Let's hope the 2.0 tdi has the same as the Allroad. Guess I'll need to wait until mine comes at the end of Oct to see what I've got.
