Hi guys,
I've just bought myself my third golf, a 56 plate GT TDi 170. It has the sat nav CD player, the one with the buttons along the bottom not touch screen and has the 6 disc multi changer in the arm rest. However I am not bothered about the changer all I want is my ipod connected. How can I go about doing this as there is what looks like should be a aux point on the front of the armrest but its just got a blank planet on now.
I would like to be able to control the iPod from the radio and charge it if I can..
What are my options guys?
I've seen the oem docks for around £60 on ebay, but does this allow me to control the iPod from the CD player?
Or what do I need to get the aux point? Which is the best option?
I look foward to your replies guys and thank you in advance
regards
Michael

I fit the VW OEM iPod dock a few years back. I think I got it for just under £100. It does what you want; charge and allows you to control music playback via the car's radio. The device just presents all your music and the first 5 playlists stored on your device as CDs in an autochanger. You can select CDs (playlists or all tracks), move within and between tracks as well as turning shuffle on and off. It will also channel any sounds coming from your device through the speakers, i.e. not just output from the Music/iPod app. For example, audio from the Podcasts app, Google Maps' directions, etc are all played back through the radio. No track names or anything fancy like that are shown in the radio's display though but it does the essentials and I find the audio quality is good.
It just plugs into the CD autochanger connection on the back of the radio. I found it relatively easy to fit with the dock cable connector routed into the glovebox. I don't think you'd be able to have both this device AND your autochanger wired up at the same time but as you've said, I doesn't sound like you'll miss the autochanger.
As for an AUX in on the radio. I think some of the newer radios (at a guess from about 2007 onwards) had an AUX in input connection. Mine didn't so I don't know too much about this. I think it's just a few pins on a connector on the back of the unit. I think you also needed to enable it using VCDS or equivalent. If your radio has this input, you might be able to get it working but of course it wouldn't also charge your device.
Hope that helps,
Stuart

If it has silver buttons on the front of the Nav (indicates its a 2007 spec unit) then Aux is a very cheap and easy retrofit :)

Thanks J400uk, what do you mean by 2007 spec unit as my car is 2006 56 plate? Do they start putting the facelift items on before 07? As I think mine has the facelift front bumper where the middle bit comes out if you get what I mean?

I would wager yours will easily be 07 spec :)
They normally start from around June the year before as bizarre as it sounds! You can check from the VIN, the 10th digit indicates the model year so 7 would be 2007
