Installed a 2013 model RNS 510 into the golf this afternoon, which went pretty smoothly. Have only done a handful of miles and having some issues with the nav not always keeping up with actual vehicle location, despite no overhead obstructions and picking up 7 / 8 satellites. Also can't figure out how to change nav display to orient to vehicle direction. Map faces permanently north, which is a pain. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi, does anyone have any experience / solutions for this. I've also got no front rear fader.
Thanks
Dave

Just wondering if there's anyone in the Sunderland area with knowledge of the RNS510 and / or VCDS?

Hi, my RNS 310 does similar sometimes and temporarily looses the vehicle location or gets it wrong. I think it might be due to the GPS antenna location which is in between the glovebox/ airbag and air vents. Where is yours?

Hi, mine is just behind the unit in a convenient space near the top of the dash. It's magnetic and attaches fairly securely on top of a metal bracket. I don't seem to have a problem with getting good satellite fixes. I had good fixes on 7/8 satellites when out and about today, but the unit still seems to lag, then catch up, plus compass doesn't work and maps face north. Now wondering whether I've bought a lemon. Plenty of threads around reporting similar problems, but sadly no fixes. Dave

Hi I have noted your bump and jumped over to your thread.
1) Drive around for a few miles and some of your problems might right themselves. i.e. Location this usually does take a little mileage to settle in.
2)Keeping up with the location can be the same.
3) Orientation do you have a little box with arrows on the side of it? if so tap it and see what happens it should centre you at your current location.
Above this will be another box with an "N" for north in it again press this and see if it switches display to what you want.
I will check mine tomorrow and come back to you.
I f you can bring up the split screen view there should be a compass view box, I think this is your resolution for directional travel

Thanks for the advice. Sadly, driving around hasn't improved things. The sat nav can follow a general route, but the map seems to hunt around a lot as if looking for a heading. It rarely faces the correct direction of travel and the compass never moves from north, including the split screen image. I tell a lie, the compass came on briefly yesterday evening for a few seconds outside of the house, and displayed correctly before freezing to north as I pulled off.
In terms of the boxes you refer to, the icon with the arrows does centre the location, but doesn't affect direction. In 2d and topograph, the north icon changes appearance slightly when pressed which seems to move the location up, or down, the screen, but doesn't change orientation at all. Interestingly, when in 3d, the north button doesn't respond at all. Could this possibly be a coding issue? My understanding was that these are plug and play and VCDS only adds MFD functionality and clears any fault codes? I also have no fader. I understand this can be affected by cars with amps, which are coded differently, although mine doesn't have one.
I like a challenge, but tearing my hair out now!

The long coding in 37 should be able to fix your fading problem (ie coded for 4 speakers) this link may help you.

Richard, did you manage to check how you change screen orientation on your unit?
I've posted all over the web now, including our friends in Lithuania and Poland, and still no joy.
Cheers

What SW level is installed in your unit, (5128 is a bit flakey, and 5130 is a VW issue), and what V9 maps. ?
VW issue is 7918 and all others are enthusiast modified with speed cams ect and can be dodgy.
MY RNS came as a brand new unit with SW 5128 and V9 version 7920 which was not quite correct. I changed to 7918 and it fixed POI's for instance.
Bought from ebay said location was England, but it came from Lithuania. There is a lot of fiddling with these unit but is difficult to pin down. They can change the serial No.,pin code and I think they are printing the labels for the units and printing the code cards.
Depending on your maps I would look to install a clean VW released set.
Will have a look at the orientation ? for you. and report back

Evening,
I really appreciate your help.
There's something not quite right about this unit and I raised a dispute through eBay today to try and resolve this one way or another. How did you discover yours was from Lithuania?
Spec is as follows:
1TOO3560H
HW. H71
SW. 4120
Maps. W Europe 7920
Dodgy maps?! Can you recommend a reliable source?
Thanks again!

I discovered it was coming from Lithuania when I got the tracking No. It did arrive very quickly and I would say it was as advertised on Ebay, that is," brand new never have been fitted in a car".
The map version (as yours 7920 is not a VW issue, but a www modified with speed cams (see this site Volkswagen-Seat-Skoda - Page 6 (http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/index6.html) )
SW 4120 is official VW issue and is deemed to be ok.
I was supplied my map V9 7918 by another guy on another forum who lives very near to you for £20.
PM me (an email address) and I will pass on your details, but I must ask him 1st.
I think it would be a good idea to reload proper maps as this might just be your problem

Thought it was worth an update. A local vw enthusiast kindly helped by loading new firmware, maps and coding unit to the car. This didn't resolve the issue, however, and with all avenues exhausted ebay very quickly gave me a full refund including return postage. I fitted a replacement unit on Saturday morning, which thankfully worked straight out of the box. Similar story to Richard@theBrae, I ordered mine from what I thought was a UK dealer, but it also came from Lithuania. That being said, it was immaculate, newer than the defective unit and comes with a warranty, so I'm happy again.

Hi, the first unit was from a UK seller.
Here's the link to the seller that I got the second unit from;
