View Full Version : Limp Mode + ESP/EML light and struggling to start (codes in thread!)

Hey everyone, this is my first post here (but not on other forums, and yes, I made a typo in my username :( )

Just bought an 2007 Audi A4 TDI 2.0 TDV 140 (VIN: 8E, Engine: BRE)
I bought the car as spares or repair with the intention of repairing it.

The car is in limp mode, it limits at ~3200 RPM, it struggles to start (takes around 10 seconds of turning over) and the engine is running slightly lumpy, particularly at idle but you cannot feel any misfire accelerating or cruising - it's just slow! The engine management light and ESP light are illuminated. When I clear the codes, the EML light will stay off for a while but always comes back on, the car stays in limp mode regardless. I drove the car 150 miles home, and it didn't miss a beat the whole way, once it's cruising, aside from the low power its smooth and quiet.

The person I bought it off claims to have tried 'everything', although I know this does not include injectors, looms and harnesses.

Today I tried some typical basic steps just to see what the result would be.
- Fuel filter: This was replaced
- Fuel pump / relay: Not checked directly, but while the filter was off i primed the pump and started the car, fuel was being delivered.
- MAF clean: Cleaned with proper cleaner. Also tried unplugging it
- MAF harness voltages: Reading... Pin 5: 0 / Pin 4: 1.5 / Pin 3: 12.8 / Pin 2: 0 (All taken at idle)
- Injector cleaner: Put in the fuel filter on install and ran through.

Only 'result' was a slight improvement in starting. Previously it would go through 3 'stages': Cranking, half firing (imagine cold starting an old diesel with knackered glow plugs) then it would actually fire and run. Now it just cranks for up to 10 seconds, then fires straight away

I also used a Snap-On Solus scanner, Cleared the codes, took it for a drive and re-read them. These are what was found...

Under engine management:
01618 Sensor Reference Voltage B: Too Low P0652

Under brake electronics:
01312 Powertrain Data Bus Malfunction Intermitent
00532 Supply Voltage B+ Lower Limit Reached Intermittent
01316 ABS Control Module Not A Plausable Signal Intermittent

Under airbag: (did this last and cleared it, so may not be relevant, not checked if it's come back or not as not had a scanner)
00532 Supply Voltage B + Power Supply Voltage Too Low Intermittent

Those are all the codes I pulled.
The ECU has already been sent off for testing (receipt to prove) and came back without fault.
I have a VagCom cable on the way, which should be here Tuesday so I can perform more tests and readings etc, but hopefully these codes and symtpoms are somewhere to start. Obviously I have some money to use to fix it, but I don't want to go blindly throwing parts and money at it for no reason, so any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, if i've missed anything, let me know.

The above links are what your codes mean, are any of your carpets wet?

Welcome to VWAF.

No wet carpets no, hammered it down yesterday also, so no water ingress or anything. was just going through the ross-tech wiki myself actually so you've saved me some time, thank you ;)

should probably also mention, that the ABS does actually work and i've no ABS light on despite the codes. Several of those indicate intermittent power issues, think it's worth getting my battery tested?
Edit: Just had a battery test done. Was only holding about 11V under load, do you think this could be a cause for the multiple codes?

Also, is the first fault code not this one: 17036/P0652/001618 - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17036/P0652/001618) (the one you posted was A, not B)

Hi yes I would replace battery first then clear all codes and road test an re check.

Sorry thought i'd edited the post to update, i tried a friends battery yesterday (680CCA / 75AH) which was brand new and no luck. Left the battery disconnected for 5 minutes between changes.

My VCDS cable should arrive tomorrow, can anyone advise what sort of diagnostics and tests I should be doing so I can report back with logs, thanks

VCDS cable came today.

I ran a scan and did a map sensor (ignition on / engine off) test following this guide: HOW TO - Check your intake manifold pressure sender (G71) using Vagcom/VCDS - VW T4 Forum - VW T5 Forum (http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=84104)

The result is as follows:
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o255/magsmagsmags_2007/mapsensor_zpsf6373f79.png (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/magsmagsmags_2007/media/mapsensor_zpsf6373f79.png.html)

Atmos pressure fluctuates wildly between 999 and 1099, according to the guide these should be stable, and also the values of boost and atmos pressure should be close, which they are not.

These are the fault codes pulled, no changes really but posting anyway:

If anyone else see's this i thought i should add i solved the issue - it was the map sensor
