Fog light randomly coming on

For the last few weeks the rear fog light on my golf keeps coming on... It's completely random and is obviously related to the boot being opened and closed but I'm not sure where to start to be honest...

It is a common fault for the wiring to fray and snap in the rubber boot that carries the wires from the car to the boot lid. Check them out as perhaps you have this problem and there is a short causing your fog light to switch on and off. There is a "howto" on this forum by stuartdalby I think.
