Just back from the dealer, car is 3.5 years old 38k on the clock.
Both rear shocks are weeping and require replacing. Extended warranty will cover this.
Also they rekon the thrust bearing, which they replaced 2.5 years ago is what is causing a sqeek, they will only warranty this for 24months so I will have to pay for the replacement if they determine that it is wear and tear.
Inchcape VW of Swindon are shocking and I really going to have to get rid of this car before it costs me a fortune, VW sorry but my car at least has been a nightmare. Will never buy another VW.

What other problems have you had to make it a nightmare - or is it the customer service?

Front brake disc corroded replaced.
Gear box lay shaft bearing, this was not replaced as dealer said it might even make it worse. No way they would change the box.
Clutch release bearing, changed on request after an arguement.
Rear wheel bearing rumbling. I had to insist they put it back on the ramp after they claimed there was no problem.
Engine warning light - Diverter valve and Oxygen sensor replaced. They initialy refused to do anything as the fault could not be reproduced, (it happened twice in 2 months)
Clutch squeaking but only when hot, either slave cylinder or release bearing as the bearing they fitted is only warranted for 24 months I may have to pay if it is that £450, even though they fitted it 28 months ago.
Both rear shocks. Surely VW can use shocks that last more than 3 years.
The real problem is every time I take it in, I spend 30 minutes arguing with them about what they are going to do. I am really tired of excuses and their tireless attempts to avoid trying to fix anything. I have to get rid of the car now as I don't trust it and I suspect it will cost a fortune over the next few years.
If you have one buy an extended warranty.

Ok, plenty of problems then...
Odd about the gearbox - I had mine replaced albeit NOT under warranty.

Yes it is very bad, the problem started when the car was 6 months old. You would think that they should fit a new box on a new car not try to replace bits which they admit may even make the problem worse.

Agreed, I would have pushed for a full new 'box on those grounds.

James I argued with the dealer for ages on several occasions, I emailed and phoned VW UK, and they just refused.
The fault is intermittent, a rattling from the gearbox, when in neutral, it goes away if you just blip the throttle, so when ever I stop now I automatically blip the throttle.
Anyway as I said the car is going, as I am retiring, an MX5 is top of the list to replace it.

Sounds like a crap dealer/VW network there. The only argument I had was over getting my problem paid for and who to contribute - The car was out of warranty, but a gearbox shouldn't fail at 90k.
Sounds like you got a dud - Good call on the MX5 though :)
