Hello

I'm having problems removing the cap for the oil filter on my VW Polo 1.9 TDI Sport 53 reg.

I bought a Laser oil filter cup wrench 76mm today from Halfords but that didn't work. I tried the chain I normally use on my Mk3 Golf GTI but couldn't get it to grip on the plastic.

It looks as if I need to buy an impact socket.

Not sure which size to buy. Halfords only do 34 or 36mm??? When I measured up I got 35mm............ Any ideas which one to go for?

Would there be any wrenches that should work?

Many thanks for any advice.

Cheers

sounds like its been overtightened. first i would go to a dealer and get a new one as the old one will possibly not come off in one piece. if its doesn't its game over unless you have a new one ready. as to getting it off, well a 3 legged oil filter tool usually works. you could try a socket on the socket bit on top, but i doubt that will work. failing that a pair of stilsons.
oil the new sealing rubber and tighten it to the specified torque which is 25nm iirc, which is not much at all.

I,m sure your local Halfords will have a 36mm socket that you could try for fit - you might have to buy it on the understanding that if it doesn't fit you can return it. My wife's 2003 Polo 1.9 tdi sport has a 36mm fitting.
