Last week I purchased a B6 S4 Cab with the RNS-E Navigation Plus MMI installation - after playing I noticed a few things 1 - when iPhone is connected to the Audi cradle mounted on the centre console to the left of the RNS the system still says "Telephone not installed" 2 - the system startup screen is the generic Audi MMI one and not the S4. I downloaded VCDS-Lite and connected to read the code on the module and found it to be set as follows 'soft code: 0309115' - did a bit of research and checked the maps and software are on the latest version but am not sure this coding is correct - also the phone works perfectly with the Bluetooth built into this system - there is a link in this Audi Radio/Navigation System (RNS-E) - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_Radio/Navigation_System_(RNS-E)#Coding) tread that by my reckoning my system should be coded as 0413211 (A4Cab/A4Cab//A4Cab/Base plate??/no digital tuner/no tuner+MFSW) - I also think I need to change channel 18 to 2 so that I get an S4 splash screen at startup.. anyone have any experience of this or any ideas whether I am barking up the wrong tree??
Try the coding & then comeback with any further issues :)

I only have vcds-lite free at the moment so cannot code, wanted to see if my idea as sound before I paid a specialist to change it for me
Must be someone out there with a B6 S4 cab with a properly coded mmi ;)
Where in West Sussex are you, as I'm in East & down at Brighton Audi this morning for a job if you want it all coded in properly.

I'm in Southwater just up the A24 before Horsham... unfortunately I cannot escape from work to get down to Brighton which is a real shame.. do you think if I purchased a VCDS-Lite key I would be able to make this kind of change??.. I know there are limitations unless you buy the entire VCDS product and cable but that would be overkill for my needs
If you'll pay for my time, I can come up to you if your works around the Horsham area, I'll PM my number.

Well I decided to be brave - vcds-lite plus my eBay cable allowed me to recode so I did it
Wow... Sound is a much better for the car and the phone system now detects the phone when connected to the cradle - happy days
The only thing the unregistered version won't do is allow me to change the register for the s4 splash screen - now do I want to pay £50+ for a cosmetic change?? That the million dollar question, but I so want it to say S4 ;)

little bit more fettling and it would seem the 3rd to last digit should be a 7 and not a 2 - so my final code is 0413711 which works a treat with my wife's iphone4s

Ok the image is on its side for some reason or other (original is not) but I am a happy boy now - used Megs Plastex to remove the damaged antiglare coating and change the register to now say S4 on boot... also found the language was set to German (even though it was English from what I could see) and the car was set to LHD so I changed to RHD
All done for now
- Screen looks great
- Phone is working (although iOS7 is a bit flaky)
- System is set up to A4 RHD cab
- Splash screen is now set to S4

Excellent - least it looks how it should now.
iOS7 is still obviously in beta so you'd expect some things not to be perfect ;)

the right side up (obviously) I am no stunt driver
yep iOS7 Beta3 is a vast improvement over previous versions but on the system it shows 'insert SIM' even though the phone functions fine - it also no longer passes the carrier and signal strength through to the screen as well
Hopefully this is a glitch and not the future or there will be a lot of annoyed Audi owners out there

Just been back through the very thorough service history to see why the unit wasn't coded properly - seems that it was replaced by the dealer in year 3 of it's life and I guess the apprentice was on duty that day and didn't finish the job
So in the spirit of the forum ethos here is what I found to be correct for the MMI RNS-E with cradle and BT installed in a 2005 S4 B6/8H Cabriolet - no MFSW or other accessories installed
Radio/Navigation code - 0413711
0?????? - always need a starting 0
?4????? - Car type Audi A4 Cabriolet (8H)
??1???? - Front Treble Speaker Monitoring inactive inactive (ONLY Audi A4 Cabriolet)
???3??? - Sound characteristic Audi A4 Cabriolet (8H)
????7?? - Telephone Base Plate diagnostic capable with Comfort Control (for Europe)
?????1? - Equipment Tuner not installed
??????1 - Equipment II TV-Tuner/CD-Changer/Multi-Function Steering Wheel not installed
For the Adaption settings I set as follows
Channel 002: Wheel Pulse = 45
Channel 003: Language (Screen) = 1 English UK
Channel 004: Back-Up Camera = 0 none
Channel 005: Speed Threshold (Video Input) = 1 for Europe
Channel 010: Region = 0 for Europe
Channel 018: Start Screen = 2 for S4
Saved it all and now everything is coded and set up for the car as it should be, maybe this will be some help to others

ok still playing with this - my devices connect and work with setting 7 but the display on the RNS-E show Please insert SIM message and the status box shows SIM where the signal/BT symbol should be - I can make an receive calls still with no issues albeit the mic volume is very low from my side
So I did some messing around and changed the 7 to a 2 and now I see number details, Vodaphone, call status and signal strength on the RNS-E display - however no phonebook is transferred as the services are not found by the various phones I have tried via BT
Something is amiss also - I figured maybe there was something wrong with the coding for module 77 (telephone) but when I search for it using VCDS-Lite it times out and nothing is found
I suspect I need setting 7 on the RNS-E to be on but for some reason am not able to see the BT module to check and change the coding here if needed
Any ideas?? where is the BT module located so I can pull it out and maybe factory reset it (if possible)
is it possible the RNS-E was upgraded to the latest FW with the wrong setting and this upgrade didn't pass down to the BT module so they are now out of step?

My coding on my BT module is made up of this -

Odd that you can't see the module, try resetting the RNSE by holding in the RADIO and SETUP buttons together and see if it comes back.
Reading online, the RNSE BT modules rarely fail.
If you're using an iPhone make sure you have the phonebook switched on in your BT menu.
The BT module will be under the front passenger seat, but simply unplugging it won't reset/reboot it.

hmmm. I tried the reset process but the same - just cannot talk to module 77 - I figured it was the coding that was wrong but it is weird that the BT features are all working even to the point of showing signal strength, call status, carrier and number called/calling on the RNS-E screen - it is as though the BT module is set to basic here
0x?xxxx: Functions
0 = Basic (for RNS-E basic/Radio)
1 = Comfort (for RNS-E high/RNS-Low)
But why can I not see it??... I did find somewhere that the getting the following wrong can isolate the BT module ie setting K-Line instead of CAN will stop communication and require the unit to be connected to a system with that bus line to change again (what is the B6??... CAN??)
0xxx?xx: Installation List
1 = Diagnostics via CAN
2 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel, Diagnostics via CAN
3 = Head Unit (e.g. RNS-E), Diagnostics via CAN
4 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel, Head Unit (e.g. RNS-E), Diagnostics via CAN
5 = Diagnostics via K-Line

7 = Head Unit (e.g. RNS-E), Diagnostics via K-Line
8 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel, Head Unit (e.g. RNS-E), Diagnostics via K-Line
On the iPhone there are no options other than forget which again leads me to believe the unit is set to basic
I am speculating here but - maybe the spanner monkey who replaced the RNS-E under warranty screwed up the coding and instead of sorting it out simply told the owner at the time that "this is how it works" and blagged a way out
I will check the module P# under the passenger seat after work
The next thing I am going to do it set channel 97 = 1 and the RNS-E code back to 7 and force a firmware update to see if something got futzed here - I do not have an old version to go back to so can only try to reflash the 650 that came in the car
Cheers
but simply unplugging it won't reset/reboot it.
Yes it will, if a module is locked up & wont respond, unplugging the specific module releases the lockup sometimes & allows it to reset/reboot.
As you have a B7, its kline, so if you cant talk to it, then this may not be connected properly & the bt module must be coded as kline, not 4 as 8P's which is CAN.

mine is a S4 B6 Cab.. I will pull and see if it unlocks
Nice to see we all learn something new everyday :)
mine is a S4 B6 Cab..
Same systems, B6 or 7 & no guarantees a hot plug will fix it, but one thing to test, fuse will do the same job tbh.

hmmmm.. no unit under the passenger seat.. I am guessing it is buried behind the glovebox?!?!
Any ideas which fuse I can yank?

Try under the carpet, under the passenger seat.
MJ, Can you show me a log of your rns-e with vcds, full log please not just few snippet lines.

pulled fuse 8 for a minute and the BT module powered off
after putting it back and resetting the RNS-E I can now access module 77 via VCDS-Lite
Current code = 0000502
So I decided my code should be
0
0 = audi
1 = Comfort (for RNS-E high/RNS-Low)
0 = No MFSW
7 = Kline + RNS-E
0 = No Speech
2 = English Language
0010702
Now the final issue I can change it all except for the ??1???? this will not take as a 1 and stays as 0
I R Confused?!?!

I noticed that on your system Chris the part number and details are higher than mine
Part No SW: 8P0 862 335 AA HW: 8P0 862 335 S
Maybe this is a limitation of my unit?

I retrofitted my Bluetooth and the AA module was the latest version at the time - I think it's a 2009 module.
I know some modules had issues but check when yours was manufactured by hitting Advanced ID on the telephone module page on vcds.
Have you tried a different non apple phone?

hmmm... no idea now.. I wonder if the BT unit is basic only and that is the issue - everything else checks out.. not a huge deal as by setting the Nav from 7 to 2 I can now see signal strength, carrier and call details - just cannot do anything with the phone books (tried several different device types with same result) - without changing the 0 to a 1 on the 77 module this is how it will have to stay
here are those extra details but i am not sure if they say much else

Just found this Bluetooth module upgrade (http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s4-a4-a4-cab-b7-chassis/140476-bluetooth-module-upgrade.html)
Seems that there is a big difference between mine and yours
8P0 862 335 A MY 2004 A3/A4 - Basic functionality only
8P0 862 335 AA MY 2010 (Europe)
That extra 'A' makes all the difference and my unit is Basic only - so this explains why I cannot set the bit to '1' :)
Ho hum guess I will just have to live with it - maybe I will try to source an AA from ebay
Q- Can you tell me what the differences are between full functionality and basic functionality, I'm also looking to fit and RNS-E and BT kit.
A - Full functionality = hands-free plus voice dialling, and phone books and call lists shared with RNS-E.

Funny.. Chris (if this is you ) probably knew this from previous experience ;)
8P A3 OEM Bluetooth 8P0 862 335 AA - Request Out Of Range (http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/156547-8p-a3-oem-bluetooth-8p0-862-335-aa-request-out-range.html)
I don't suppose an A can be reflashed to an AA???....... or am I peeing in the wind on that one?
Guest 2

Yep thats me, I think the first module was flashed permanently to German and it wouldn't allow any other coding.
My second AA unit was from a A3 2009 and it allowed all coding to be changed so it was a proper non-flashed unit unlike the above which obviously had some bugs of some sort in it preventing coding change.
They can be reflashed, but VCDS can't do this and you'll need to delve deeper into vagcan pro I think does reflashing.
Any of the above modules with full functionality should do the trick.
These are the only ones on eBay at the minute and because I was stung on my German bought module, stay away in this case unless the unit is brand new - 8P0 862 335 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=8P0862335&_sop=10&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.X8P0+862335&_nkw=8P0+862+335&_sacat=0)

I am watching this C module at the moment AUDI VW BLUETOOTH INTERFACE 8P0862335C OE (NEW) | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-VW-BLUETOOTH-INTERFACE-8P0862335C-OE-NEW-/330870506710?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d096b44d6)
He claims it is new and unboxed (I guess sitting around somewhere)
According to the listing this unit will support call status and phone book transmission between the RNS-E and BT module and give me what I want - obviously the coding would need doing but I am pretty good at that part now (learning on the job)
Cheers for the input - I only have VCDS-Lite so no chance of flashing to a higher version - may look into this and see if someone else can do it but I would have thought Audi would not allow a change from basic to advanced on the same HW for obvious reasons
I love stuff like this... bugs the hell out of me until I understand "why?" :)

So I swapped my A unit for an H module today and BT for the phone is working
However (seems to be the way at the moment) when I use Vcds-lite to connect I just cannot see module 77 - it just times out
This used to happen sometimes on the previous module but if I kept trying I would eventually get in, this time nothing
Any ideas what would cause this??? As I say the phone paired and works fine
I suspect at the moment the rns-e hi bit is set to zero stopping all the funky bits from working
Edit - asked.seller for details of the car it came from - he states 2007 b7 a4 - so would this be canbus??? If so the. I probably need to get it hooked up to another car to get it set to Kline before it will work for me
Any thoughts? Are b7's canbus??
