I have a RCD510 in my 2010 Golf MK6, and would like to know if it's worth paying £550 to have someone fit the latest RNS510 in its place (Someone on eBay). Would it (for example) allow me to see the name of tracks playing on the display, with full control of my iPhone 5 on the MFSW? At the moment the RCD510 just displays 'BT Audio' and can only controlled from the phone!
What else might justify the price tag to upgrade? Has anyone tried the Rupse DVD GPS player sat Nav with 8 Inch screen you can buy on Amazon? Are there alternatives to the RNS510 that are better?

can iPhone 5 be controlled by MDI?........it might be a cheaper option for you.

Not sure they do a MDI cable for the iPhone 5 yet!

for now maybe you could improvise with MDI usb cable and your iPhone lead
or apple do an adaptor.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs8188bJL5o

Just get an Apple Lightning to Apple 30-pin adaptor. I sometimes charge my iPad 4 in the car and use one. As the iPhone 5 has the same software as other iPhones, an adaptor would work fine.

RNS 310/ 315 may be worth a look. Can be had for around £200 - £300 and offers a 5" touchscreen with sat nav along with a CD and SD reader.

Thanks Chaps, will look at the lightning adaptor. Although looking at that YouTube clip, it may not fit on my 5 with its case on! Would it work via bluetooth on the RNS510 or is it the same as the RCD510 in that respect?
c4a5er, of course MDI to USB and iPhone 5 lead. Thanks, will try that tomorrow.

The genuine Apple lead (Apple 30-pin to Apple Lightning) has a Lightning plug which is exactly the same as the one on the lead you would have received with your iPhone 5/iPad 4 and thus if your phone lead fits your phone so will this.

I tried the MDI USB lead with the Apple lead as shown above and it says media not recognised!

That's a shame - my guess is that the problem probably lies with the MDI lead rather than the Apple converter - perhaps there's a compatibility issue. As I said above, I've used my 30-pin/Lightning converter for charging purposes, but haven't tried it on a phone as my Son & I both use iPhone 4 handsets which work perfectly with my RNS 510.
I'll be honest and say I'm not a big fan of my RNS 510 - I've had it since the car was new, and long since gave up on it as a Satnav, but that's another story. It's fine as a radio/CD/DVD/Media player, I tend to use mine most to play music from an SDHC card, and occasionally I use it with the MDI cable which is fine. I've had mixed success streaming music via Bluetooth from my iPhone 4 and previously HTC Legend.

Thanks for that Rob, interesting to hear your take on the RNS510. Not much sense in upgrading then!
