I've recently bought a facelift '58 plate A6 2.0 TDI CR 134 bhp. Getting conflicting advice on whether it is has a timing belt or chain? If it's the former, when should it be changed?
Cheers.

Belt. 60k or 4 years (whichever comes first) is what I stick to.
The only chain driven dervs in the C6 are the 2.7 and 3.0 TDI.

Darn! I wonder whether or not it has been changed. It has 80k on the clock and a FSH but no evidence that the belt has been done. Is there any way of checking visually the state of the belt or should I just bite the bullet and get it changed for peace of mind?

Thanks, turns out it hasn't been changed so I need to get onto that. Called local indy who has quoted me a very competitive £325 inc. He said this was for the belt only, but what struck me as a little odd was that he said it wasn't necessary to change the water pump as well the newer ones are metal and don't tend to fail. Any views on this?

get him to put that in writing and confirm he will fit a new pump for just the cost of the pump, but also include a new belt foc, and tensioner etc.., if the pump does fail before another belt is due. if he is prepared to do this then fine, if he would prefer to fit the new pump now, then find someone else to do it who cares.
