View Full Version : What made you buy your VAG car?

I suppose there are many reasons people decided to buy the car they now own - did you set your mind on it after reading a great review? You saw one on the road & loved it, you've always owned that type of car & will continue your loyalty etc etc..... What made you decide to buy your particular car?
For me, my lovely Fiat Marea had a cambelt snap, so I was given a Mazda rustbucket by a relative, but that soon needed some hefty repairs. So one day when I was early for an appointment I drove past a 2nd hand car dealers & thought "what the hell, I'll nip in & have a look around their forecourt - just out of interest. Looked at some of their cars, sales guy asked what I was looking for & I said I had no idea. Phoned thewife to see how much she reckoned we could afford for HP. When the guy said I could get this (pointing to my A6), I was gobsmacked! I thought II'd be looking at something like a used focus or Mondeo at best. It also had the big boot I required for my job. So I haggled on part exchange & agreed to the deal within 10 minutes of deciding to look at cars. Quite an expensive impulse buy.

I was heading towards a BMW 530/535d but saw a Le Mans one day in my works car park and that had me.
I'm so glad I didn't go BMW as this A6 has truely been the best car I've ever had. 4 years on and I still love it, plus I don't see many other Night Blue S-Line's or Le Mans.

All my cars have been VW or Audi in one form or another, not sure why I started with them as family have always had Vauxhall!- apart from a 4 month stint in a Freelander (good off-road, thirsty on it) whilst waiting for company car.
I've always loved the Golf shape and my first car was a MK3 1.4 which I killed the engine in- it was then time to get a bigger better car in the form of a b5.5 Passat wagon which I only kept for a year as I then got my first A4 B7 as company car.
When I left that company I couldn't take the car with me so I got myself the s-line (this is my favourite one out of the bunch), then had first baby so kept the mrs MK5 GT and got a MK3 GTI Anniversary which was my favourite car when I was 13- this car is so cool, love it- I've done 30k miles in a 16 year old car and only issues are snapped clutch pedal and broken rotor arm both easy fixes.
So 11 years of VAG ownership and no issues- guess people always go back to what they know :)

For me I had been looking at Scirocco's, but quickly came to the conclusion I wouldn't be able to afford one for a while.
At the time I was driving my first car, a 2002 1.2 Clio. Then, it had an MOT which produced a list as long as your arm, plus a strange grinding noise when revved beyond 3k. My mechanic noticed a fair bit of swarf under the oil cap and the camshaft had worn excessively... In short, I had to get shot, pronto.
As I couldn't afford a Scirocco, I set my sights on a Golf mk5 GT TSi or a Seat Leon FR. We actually thought the Leon was too big inside, so started pricing up the Ibiza Bocanegra. It was only when an immulate black Octavia vRS overtook me a little light came on in my head. So I set about searching for a vRS. I was originally after a red one, as I love red cars, but the one I went to see was over a grand cheaper than any others. This is due to the garage having a "used car sale on". Basically, wanting to shift used cars to make room for shiney new ones!
I went to view this vRS and seeing the colour in the light close-up sold me. Took it out for a test drive and was blown away by the comfort, handling, kit, space, performance and price. So my poor little Clio was part ex'd (all he did was start the engine and didn't rev it - thank God!) And the next week I drove away in a car bigger than a Leon, which I had thought was too big, in a colour I hadn't considered.
I wouldn't even think of getting anything else but a Skoda now. To make me feel even more smug, my friend bought a new (at the time) mk5 Golf GTI for £20k - more than twice what I paid - and when I got in it, I noticed all the switchgear and materials are the same, as is the engine, but with less room and the ride is less comfortable.
The only thing now is, I have since changed jobs from my previous 10 mile return commute, to a 72 mile return commute and now own a house, so outgoings have dramatically increased. But hey, I still love it.

My first 'proper' car was a Golf MK1 (I don't count the Citroen Ami 8 that went before it, as it was short lived and utter rubbish); I had a few forays into other marques, and then came back to VAG with a G-reg Passat (company car), then a J-reg Transporter (loved that van, covered a scary amount of miles in it and not once did it as much as cough), drove a friends Audi 100 Avant (2.2 I think?) occasionally and loved it to bits, then bought a V-reg Passat after yet another bad experience with a French car (Pug 406). Following that, I went into Jags for a while (still love them), tried a Merc which was only OK and a stopgap really, then came back to VAG again with the B6 Passat, before it scared me witless with the BKP engine and various niggles.
Searching around to get rid of the B6 Passat, I looked at various cars (as you do) - the Mondeo came close, but the fact that it would lose money faster than a bad gambler put me off; the Insignia looked good, but up close it seemed more and more like a Vectra in drag, the Lexus IS was too plasticky, and slowly but surely the list was whittled down to the Merc C-Class estate, Merc E-Class estate (both too much 'pipe and slippers' for me), the Jag XF estate (way out of budget), the BMW 3-series touring (horrid interior and jittery ride) and a few others from the VAG stable
It then narrowed to Skoda Superb estate, VW Passat B7 Estate, Audi A4 Avant, Audi A6 Avant, Seat Exeo estate (see the theme?), and it was pretty much the interior and the look of the A4 Avant that sealed it for me.
Nearly a year into ownership, I am wondering how it has passed so quickly, and still love the car - especially when I get to give it a good run; looks like VAG (and Audi in particular) might just become a habit.
