Morning all,
Hoping for some advice on an issue that has just arisen with a locked engine on our daughter's 1.9 Tdi (05 Golf SE - BKC I think). Order of events as follows:
Changed the timing belt around a month ago. Started and has run fine since, but noted an intermittent underlying knocking sound at tickover which I suspected to be DMf based on info on the forums.
Couple of weeks ago, daughter reported sound like tin cans being dragged behind car, which came and went in a couple of minutes.
Sunday night, daughter advised car seemed to vibrate / labour in the higher gears.
Monday morning, car refused to turn over at all. AA checked battery and pulled starter, both of which appeared fine, but reported metal filings in the bell housing and engine was solid when car rocked in gear.
Car has now been recovered to my home (daughter lives 120 miles away)
Oil is clean and up to level (changed 10 months ago)
Coolant is up to level (changed a month ago when I did the belt).
Havn't started to strip yet, but wondered if a disintegrating DMF could cause the whole engine to lock and, if it has, what other damage it may have caused? I'm hoping that if it failed at rest that this may have limited the damage?
Cheers
Dave
