View Full Version : Odd noise!

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or may be able to shed some light...

I've noticed a faint but strange noise on my car recently. 2009 Sportback 2.0 TDI 140 on 90k.
When reversing slowly with a decent amount of steering lock on, there's what I can only describe as a faint but noticeable intermittent 'hooting' noise.
I'm not sure if it happens with both directions of steering lock, or when driving forwards.
Reversing slowly at or near full lock left-hand-down, the noise seems to be coming from the drivers side front corner area.
It's a low pitched & seems to be roughly one 'hoot' per rev of the wheel (couldn't swear to that though).

I'm hoping it may be something daft like the brake on that corner binding slightly, or maybe a wheel bearing, or something rubbing that can be adjusted out, rather than anything more expensive. My knowledge of cars is fairly limited though so I wouldn't be confident of my own diagnosis.

At the weekend I'm gonna try to find somewhere suitable to test it some more (forward/reverse l/r lock etc.) to try & shed some further light, but at the moment I'm not even sure if it happens every time or not.

I have a 3rd party warranty on the car, but am loath to just take it somewhere for fear they'll immediately see dollar signs light up & it'll turn into a fiasco.
On the other hand if it does need parts/work I'm obvs keen for it to be done under the warranty.

So... trying to fore-arm myself with a bit of knowledge by posting here :)
Can anyone shed any light?
Thanks in advance!

Chris
