Hi,
I put £20 petrol in my near empty passat.
After driving off for about a mile i felt stuttering and stopped the car, got a bite. Came back and the car wouldnt start due to putting wrong fuel. I tried to start it about 10 times but it wouldnt start.
I then managed to get hold of a pump and extracted all the fuel out. Filled it up with £30 diesal and it started was a bit wierd almost dying but it fixed itself. Since then I have filled up several times.
However, sometimes in idle the car stutters (slight rattling which goes away with gas). What kind of damage have I done?
Thanks

Seems like good advice from a man who knows what he's talking about (unless 11,000+ posts don't count).
IF all it's going to cost is the price of a fuel filter it's a cheap fix, and worth doing anyway.

Why thank you! But I'm no mechanic, far from it! :o
Changing the fuel filter seems like the logical thing after putting the wrong fuel through it.

I'm no mechanic of any note either (well not with modern motors), but I spend some time on the relevant forums, as you obviously do, and some of the information does sink in occasionally - especially when it comes to putting in the wrong fuel, having both petrol and diesel cars.
Hopefully the OP has been lucky and not done any damage - and will let us know if it's successful.

It is possible an injector is damaged due to running without the lubrication properties of diesel fuel. This could cause a stutter. The rattle may just be the rpm dropping too low. Time will tell.
