View Full Version : Almost Newbie (Looking for A4 Avant)

Hi Gents,
I am very actively considering getting a used A4 Avant (09/ 10 plate most likely). I have been looking around for a while now and have a good idea of what I'd like - that basically being a black S-Line.
I understand that standard equipment (that I care about, and please let me know if you think there are more things I should care about) includes: rear parking sensors (acoustic - so no visual distance guidcance), half leather/ half cloth trim on seats, S-line (slightly sportier) front seats, bluetooth phone integration (controlled through the car's system), aux/ SD input for music, stop/ start (in the 2010 models, at least?)
Where I'm struggling a bit is whether I should really care about Sat Nav. 80% of the time I wouldn't use it as I'll know where I'm going (home-work-home and around my local area), and for other occasions I could use my iphone and a sat nav program I have there. My question to you guys is whether Sat Nav integration offers anything in addition? e.g. better display, visual aid for parking, anything else? I haven't really been able to figure this out from any of the sources I have been looking at.
Do you have any other advice/ thoughts you would offer in my quest?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Best,
Henrik

Hi Henrik,
Welcome to VWAF ;)
You can see a B8 brochure here which will list all standard kit along with any extras - http://www.audi.co.uk/content/dam/audi/production/PDF/UsedCars/Refresh/A4/A4%20-%20July%2009.pdf
There are two types of nav available, DVD and HDD.
The DVD offers no real benefit but the HDD will allow you to watch dvd videos and a higer res screen.
Your rear sensors can be adapted so you get visual lines on the screen, you will need a tool called VCDS for this and providing the module can support the lines, it will look something like this.

I've had some nice A4s on loan, all Ice Silver which really suits the shape IMO.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the brochure - very helpful. Strange to see that cruise control is not standard S-Line equipment as almost all S-Line cars on autotrader are listed as having cruise control. Interesting too with potential for adaptation to get visual lines on screen for the parking sensor. Not the biggest thing, I suppose, but one less point for the sat nav upgrade. Flashy as it would be, I also think I can do without DVD support.
Fully agree that car looks great in silver as well BTW, but already have a silver car so looking for a change.

09 plate's and 10 plates, parking sensors (rear acoustic only) are options, not standard fit.

Right you are. That was a very popular add-on then - judging by the number of used cars that have it. Thanks

We bought a 09 Avant back in January and have been really pleased with it. Much better than our previous B7 for space, quality, ride and (important to me) looks. I think we struck it lucky with our spec (as per my signature) and half the kit on it wasnt even listed in the sales description!
We dont have Nav which would have been nice but not necessary. Instead, we have just bought a new Tomtom GO500 and it does everything we need it for and saves killing the already carp battery on the iphone! However, if you have a charger for your iphone and are happy to use it for nav then it's worth noting google maps navigation puts the audio directions through the cars bluetooth which is a nice touch!
Also, if you're looking for 09/10 plate cars its worht noting the late 09 cars came with LED rear lights and stop/start. Ours is an early 09 and doesnt have either...

Are you saying that with the help of VCDS, you can enable Parking Plus on cars with factory sensors?

Phil - Couldn't agree more on looks - very nice looking car you have there. Did make me waver for a few seconds on my decision to go with black. Thanks for the Google maps navigation tip. Haven't tried that before, but may be worth looking into. To be honest have never really used nav on iphone as my current car has nav. So may be that I end going the Tomtom route after all.

Sooo close over the weekend. Perfect car (Black S Line, 2.0 TDI (170), Sat Nav, Parking Plus, Drive Select, AMI, 6 CD Changer, etc). Call the dealer in the morning to say that I'm coming by, drive a couple of hours from London, have a browse around the car in the lot and then follow the salesman in to go over details in prep of test drive. While we sit there another guy takes the car out for a drive. His first reaction apparently is "no" or "not yet" because we still go ahead and take it out for a drive. But when we come back and I decide that I'll take it, the other guy has just made the same commitment :zx11:
The search continues....

There will be others mate! Maybe you should go for a faster grey one instead ;)
Black only ever looks dirty unless you have literally just finished drying it off!!!

17-06-2013, 06:58 PM
Yeah, am sure there will be others. Now at least I know what is possible within budget. And so the waiting game begins. And with time I might even let you convince me to consider grey ;)
Further to the park assist question above - is it possible to retrofit the front park assist as well? And tie into the same visual display that Chris mentioned above? Would like to have both, but not many cars come with the front sensors. So would be great to have an idea whether possible to retrofit and how expensive it's likely to be to get to OEM specs. Would open up some more options.

It's possible but its not the easiest of retrofit plus the time and money you'll need to invest for a new bumper with pdc holes, brackets, loom, module sensors, wiring and so on.

Just a VCDS thing Chris.
Had a look this morning and can't do it on my car! I presume that VCDS isn't upto date enough for the face lift B8.
I understand that the option is either under Module 76 parking aid or central elect module 9. I don't have mod76 and there is no option under module 9!

I may have to get VCDS. Thats a pretty reasonable price. Is it fairly easy to use? I'm no techno-noob, I just don't want to end up bricking my car lol.

If your ok a googling, I can usually find any info i need to and once you have done one mod they all seem to follow the same format. I guess most people will think it's a lot of money just for a couple of mods, but it's a very useful tool if used to it's full potential. I am tight and have only borrowed the lead I have!

Considering the cheeky so and so's at Alan Day VW in the city wanted £150 for a diagnostic scan alone for when my car was playing up the cable would have as good as paid for itself!
Instead I let the car die and RAC did their 'diagnostic scan' of looking under the bonnet and replaced the part for £35 :)

I had coding issues on the facelift A5 I had on loan so yours will be similar to this -
You're right, there is no Parking Module even though this car had factory fit sensors.
Oh btw, if any of you want/need a scan done I'll be travelling to Scotland from Northampton at the start of August and would be happy to help anyone along the way.
