View Full Version : Android Phone with rSAP

I know that there have been several threads on the subject, but it's confusing and there doesn't seem to be one clear answer; would anyone be kind enough to summarise?
If I want a cheap Android phone which will just work in the Audi via rSAP, what should I be looking at?

HTC Desire is not rSAP.
So far as I know the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3 are rSAP 'out of the box' (not sure about the new S4 - I suspect that it also is rSAP)
I believe old Nokia phones have the rSAP function.
If you are ordering a new car - then you are lucky in that the MMI has a SIM slot - so you can connect your phone via bluetooth to have phone function and use the sim (from the likes of Gifgaff) to give you unlimited internet access. This is something a lot of wanted but could not get when we all ordered our cars....!!

This may not be directly relevant to the Audi installation, but my Passat has the (awful) factory fit Premium Bluetooth Kit so needs an rSAP phone to work.
I bought two Samsung Galaxy S2 phones. My wife's will connect with my car, usually, but sometimes falls over and frequently locks things up so that I have to spend ages getting my old Nokia to talk to it again.
My daughter's just will not connect. No way, Jose. I've tried everything. But they were both on the same software version, firmware, etc. No rhyme nor reason for the problem. It just is.
If you want a cheap phone, with a strong chance it will work then I'm afraid you might have to forgo Android and get a nasty little Nokia.

I have the S 2, got it last October i think. It came with firmware 2.? and rsap didn't work. I upgraded it to 4.0.4 and it that sorted the rsap. Works fine, sometimes the phone forgets to connect back to the network afterwards which is a pain, I need to check it. I'd say it's 1 in 20 times this happens.

I can't answer your question directly and you're probably aware of these two but just in case:
Audi's take on it:
Phone compatibility < Owners area < Audi UK (http://www.audi.co.uk/owners-area/phone-compatibility.html)
select the 'Car Phone' filter,
or the offer from Orange:
Single Number | business phone services | Orange business | Orange business (http://business.orange.co.uk/home/small/products-and-services/services-and-accounts/voice-services/single-number)
it's a business offering but suspect there is nothing to stop you going for it, apart, maybe, from it being a bit more expensive than a consumer deal. This would appear to let you have two SIMs with the same phone number, put one SIM in the car and another in your phone with calls being switched automatically between the SIMs. Algorithm for this switching are explained on the site.

If it helps - I've just changed from a Blackberry to a Samsung S4 and the changeover in the A6 was painless. Deleted pairing and paired the S4..... no problem

Do you have phone prep high and if so does this phone connect using RSAP so that things like Google earth work?

Nexus 4 has Rsap but car is low prep I think! phone connected using bluetooth.

Can you expand on your nexus 4 working? I'm taking it that it didn't work for you out the box - you had to root and then install the third party rsap stack linked above?
That's the path I'm currently on - but would be interested if someone else has managed to get the nexus 4 working with rsap out the box.

When I got the car I found out that the phone I had then (Galaxy II) would not load my contacts into memory and not allow my music to be played from phone. I read about the Nexus 4 and bought it from Google Play (Unlocked) and everything worked when paired the phone to the car, I never needed to root the Nexus 4.
The reason I listed this web site is that the phones that have problems, this shows that you can get an app to resolve these issues. Try this link from same site it shows Audi problems..................

I asked the question because the OP wanted to know about phones that will reliably work to support a BT RSAP connection to phone prep high out of the box without having to install any 3rd party s/w.
If your car has low prep it will have support for a cradle and if it has the standard BT offering it will just connect using HFP for calls, A2DP to stream music and probably PBAP to access the phone book.

Ah ok. rSAP is a very specific thing and you won't be using it for 'normal' pairing / contacts / music streaming.
To my knowledge the nexus 4 doesn't support rsap out of the box. (I'd really like to know if anyone has got it working though as I could be doing something wrong)
You can indeed use the app you linked but you *will* have to root the nexus 4 to get it working, which adds layer of complexity and divergence from a supported base that a lot of people may not be comfortable with. This app also doesn't work with all phones. You need to have a specific bluetooth chipset etc in the handset alongside other conditions.
