20763It goes Alternator, PAS, Aircon pump, Crank and Tensioner. It's "outside" on everything except the tensioner

Hi Doctle odd,
First of all i have no AC, secondly although new belt & old belt are the same length i seem to have too much belt. If i had the AC cog i could understand the configuration but without i am struggling to figure it out. Should there be any movement in the tensioner as it seems to be solid apart from the cog turning ?

. The tensioner will turn anti-clockwise and give you enough space to slip the belt on

Turn it anti clockwise with as long a spanner as you can it will be stiff it has to be. you can lock one spanner into another for extra leverage

Doesn't want to move, just wondering if the alternator is adjustable ?

some of the alternators have an adjuster, a toothed wheel on a toothed rail. The car has a tensioner so that's what tensions the belt. Did you try turning the bolt clockwise and removing the pulley to have a look? How did you get the old belt off?

The belt was shredded, no warning at all, off the cogs. I've managed to free the tenioner off, it was solid and now moves and can be locked off until the belt is on but it looks as though the alternator is goosed or at least the bearing ? I noticed the cog on the alternator wasnt running true but after i put the belt on it just came off again.

What year is the car, is the pulley on the alternator loose in a side to side way. The clutch may be gone on it and that's what threw off the belt. It's a cheap enough fix

It's a 1994 & yes it certainly has a fair bit of movement

Your alternator pulley is fcuked. ALTERNATOR CLUTCH PULLEY Audi A6 1.9 TDI A4 1.9 TDI Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALTERNATOR-CLUTCH-PULLEY-Audi-A6-1-9-TDI-A4-1-9-TDI-Volkswagen-Passat-1-9-TDI-/360428143447?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AAudi%7CCars+Type%3A2.6&hash=item53eb310357) genuine part will be twice that price and you need special tool to change it they cost about a tenner
