This morning got in the car, noticed that the engine emission light was on, its solid yellow and looks like an engine. Took it to a local garage (non-Audi) who very kindly reset the light for me. Their fault code reader said it was an exhaust gas pressure sensor fault. They advised to drive the car hard with high revs to clear out the dpf. So far the light has not come back on. Phoned Audi who said the light will come back on and a new part will be required.
Car is a 2.0 tdi 59 plate, 40,000 miles.

More than likely its a DPF pressure sensor, very common fault on the DPF model's.
Get a full autoscan with VCDS if you can.

Agree with Chris here, its quite common - bloke who did my remap said a lot of his VAG customers have that fault. I've got a TDie and thats been mapped and DPF removed, mine now produces 184bhp and 420nm. Plus its even more economical now (if driven steady)

That sounds great! Mine is also a 2.0 tdi e model in a state of de-tune to 136bhp. I would love to have DPF removed and remapped. Can you advise of cost and where to get it done?

Check the forums sponsors, or look in the tuning/remapping forum.
I've a friend in Glasgow that's used these people for remap and DPF removal...albeit for a Beemer

got mine done in Crewe by More-BHP.com for just over 400 squid. Jason knows his stuff, seems to get the most out of the VAG engines (did a lot of research before i got mine remapped). He specialises in VAG and dirty BMWs but hes a bit far from you!

Yep - a common fault. My 2009 had this issue - I have VCDS and reset the EML first time - the error reported was:
4914 - Diesel Particle Filter; Differential Pressure Sensor: Implausible Signal
P2453 00 [032] - Lower Limit Exceeded
5182 - Particulate Trap Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
P2002 00 [096] - Defective
5262 - Exhaust Pressure Sensor 1 (G450): Signal too Low
P0472 00 [040] - Defective
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 173
Mileage: 75614 km
Date: 2011.09.17
Time: 10:25:58
5162 - Exhaust Pressure Sensor 1 (G450): Implausible Signal
P0471 00 [096] - Open or Short to Plus
Readiness: 0 1 0 0 0
When the EML came back on, I took the car to the dealer and they replaced the G450 sensor which they said was faulty. My car was still under warranty at the time so I can't give you a cost estimate, sorry. It's not a big job - they did it while I waited.
Cheers!
MF.

Thanks for all the advice, I've got it booked in to Audi next week. I'm just wondering if getting a Remap and DPF removed if the car would later fail on emissions testing at MOT?

no. its a smoke test not an emissions test as such.
