P reg Golf 1.9 CL TDI

Hi there i have a P reg golf what i would like to know is whether the 1.9 TDI lump is the same as in an P / R reg Audi (as in could i get my engine straight swapped into an A4 / A3 ????

The block may be virtually identical, but the early A4's had 'inline/longitudinal' engines, and most Golf's had 'East-West/transverse' mounted engines.

Yes i have seen this as my wife has an audi a4 but does that make it incompatable?

I have just looked in both cars the engines are slightly different the sideways motion and long ways doesn't look like it matters as the drive shafts come from the gear box which is bolted on the side the only difference i can see is the oil filter on the golf is faceing down but on the audi it is slightly sideways / down
