Well I thought I'd better do another thread, and this will be my final one as the car gets traded in ten days time.

I had the car switched to long life service scheule at the 40k service. I managed to stretch the service indicator to 19.5k miles between services. I actually ran past the service due indicator due to work commitments so some new owner will get a car still showing 18k miles to next service, at roughly 81k miles.

Service was pretty reasonable at £260 - done at my local VW dealer Sinclairs

The day before the service the glow plug light started flashing , which by the time i got the car to the dealership became a solid EML light. Diagnosed as a failed EGR valve - although out of warranty VW , VW CS and Sinclairs picked up almost all the bill, leaving me ca £60 to pay.

Following day the glow plug light started flashing again - back to dealer, diagnosed as a failed dpf pressure sensor - another £28 bill after 85+% goodwill.

Other than those issues, and my early high pressure fuel pump failure, the car hasn't been half bad. A few niggles here n there but they are in the design and not build or quality issues as such.

The winter tyre set is now back in storage - they were used for over 25k miles over 3 winters and have proved invaluable - not only for the extra safety but also the impoved ride comfort and the 5mpg bettter economy. They also have a long winter season of wear left in them before they hit the 4mm depth markers.

As its soon to depart I thought I'd start to weigh up the costs of ownership..

Summer tyres have been limited to a pair of Falken ZE-912s and a pair of Pirelli P7s - ca £400 total as they are 225/45/17 size

Winter tyre set cost me £20 for the steel wheels from ebay and £254 for the 4 195/65/15 Nokian W+ tyres fitted.

Servicing - the first three were covered by the service plan, the 40k miler was around £250 from recollection and the final 60k one another £260. MOT was free via Sinclairs, with nothing other than a headlight bulb to replace.

I had one lot of four wheel laser alignment because of the odd block wear on the rear tyres, cost £35, again at Sinclairs

Fuel economy has averaged out around 56mpg, made up of ca 52-53mpg on summer wheels and 58mpg on the winters. My best mpg for a long journey was 76.3mpg, and I did over 70mpg on that same 130mile journey time, and time , again so it wasn't a fluke (just me light right foot and relaxed driving style :D )

Overall costs including depreciation have been..

11.5p per mile (helped no end by the original 19% discount)
12.5p with servicing (beyond the service package which was in the original purchase price),
13.5p incl servicing and tyres !

You can't complain at that - even adding in the fuel cost of ca 10p/mile thats still pretty cheap motoring from a new car.

Playing devils advocate I could have been faced with a £1200 bill for the fuel pumps, £1000 bill for the egr valve and £250 bill for the dpf sensor but most of that got covered by VW thankfully.

So 3.5years, and by then 64k miles, it will be away to find a new owner.

The interior has stood up well, despite the weave of the cloth being a bit of a pain for dog hairs. Nothing fell off or failed in the interior. The MMI connection was welcome and pretty easy to use although navigating the file structures was a bit long winded. Externally the paintwork has stood up well - its still a very tidy car, with minimal stone chips despite the mileage - the alloys are almost as new (no doubt helped by winter hibernation and regular waxing). A pair of headlight bulbs, a number plate bulb and two sets of wipers have been the only other small expenses.

Exciting - no.
Economical family /commuting hack - yes

Just one of those cars that sort of works with you I guess !

Brilliant write up percy. Just noticed in your sig you've got 'lowered suspension' on your spec.. was this a factory fitted option at the time? i'm confused becasue i dont think they offer this option anymore  how have you found the suspension, has it held up well over the 81k?

Really nice write up, thanks for taking the time to share.

I'm sure this will be an invaluable tool for anyone wanting to buy one of these either new or used in the future.

Should be made "how to" or similar IMO for the benefit of others moving forward.

Thanks again and good luck with your new ride.

At the time, the sports suspension came as a package with the upgraded 17" seattle alloys

Ride comfort has been OK, a bit hard at times but overall OK - i notice a big difference with the soft 15" winters mind. I'd actually go as far as to say that a combination of sports suspension and 16" alloys is about perfect on the Mk6, of course a combo VW don't offer ! But of course its all personal choice, many want a comfy ride over the bumps and not firm suspension to reduce roll in the corners.

And just to verfiy..(after 64k miles)

I'm still on the original..
