View Full Version : MMI Update - Are Intermediate Updates Needed?

Hi,
This is my first post, and I have been searching for this answer for a while. I was wondering if anyone could help me before I brick my 2005 A6. I have just bought the AMI and it isn't being detected because of the firmware version.
I had misunderstood the version string. SW: C6-HU 6350 05.0.0 0413
I thought that mean it had a newer enough version for AMI, but I now understand this to mean it is really really old. I've found plenty of 5570 discs, but they all start from version 1110.
So my questions are, do I need an intermediate update before I can upgrade to 5570? And where on earth do I find these ancient discs?
Thanks

It look like you have FW 500 ... you can press setup+return to place mmi into update mode ... then select interfacebox to confirm ....
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg629/gupsterg/MMIVersion_2.jpg
Here are some part no for the discs Link:- MMI 2G FW discs Part Numbers (http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmmi%2Bfirmware%2B0500%26client%3Dfire fox-a%26hs%3DoOJ%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=de&u=http://www.a6-wiki.de/index.php/MMI_2G_Teilenummern%25C3%25BCbersicht&usg=ALkJrhjdm4APkSYUy1ij1T9dkx_fRgVP6A)
Google for:-
i) mmi firmware 500
ii) mmi firmware 0500
iii) mmi interfacebox 0500
And perhaps decide for yourself ...
People have gone from 500 to 5xxx but the older phone module can be hit and miss for update from what I've read ... perhaps you not have phone prep?
Mine was an early one and went AOK, 2120>5570 ... I would advise you use a battery charger on the slave points under the bonnet ...
Seen people on here go from 1xxx to 5570 ...

Thanks for the responses. I don't have a BT module on my car. But thanks to the links, I found that Audi charge just under £3 for the 1100 disc set and £6 ish for the 5570. Why on earth are people charging £20 for the same thing.... Just one last question on this, is there a UK specific disc set?
I'm going to order 4E0 906 961 H (1100) and 4L0 998 961 (5570).
Anyway, going tomorrow down to Audi to order the discs, get it updated (fingers crossed) and finally try out my shiny new AMI.

No specific disc for the UK - it's a Europe-wide version which includes us.
Keep us updated to how you get on ;)

Just got my CDs and swirl flap kit from Audi having had my flywheel clutch and chain tensioner replaced :( this car is costing me a fortune.
The 1110 update is just a single CD while 5570 is three CD. Is this correct, I thought both were triple CD updates. Can someone confirm before I start. As I can't get a charge kit to it I'm gonna have to do it with the engine running. Fingers crossed.

Charge kit? You only need a battery charger connected to the points left back of the engine bay...thought everyone had a charger?
One will cost less than £25 from Argos or Halfords...would recommend getting one to do the updates

I've only got a booster to start a car. Not sure its battery will last the update and can't be used when plugged into the mains. Will get a charger tomorrow.

Just borrow one from a neighbour as you never know what the weather's going to do tomorrow!
Preferrably one that's got a clapped out old banger...just to give em a laugh :biglaugh:

I give up. Haven't been able to get a single parking space near my house. Don't know who has parked outside mine neighbours don't know.
Would it be possible to do the update with engine running for power?

Hi people, my MMI SW-Index is 2830 and I have purchased 5570 Update CDs. Shall I go for 5570 update or do I need to do earlier updates first?
Many thanks

Took an hour to do but I finally have 5570 installed!!
Performed update from 500 to 1110 then from 1110 to 5150 (CD1 of the 5570 set) didn't need CD2 as it couldn't find anything to update (I don't have BT Module) and finally 5150 to 5570 (CD3).
Now I have a fully working AMI of which I'm very chuffed to get working at long last with a USB stick. 3D Sat Nav mode doesn't seem to appeal to me so I've switched that back. Is there anything else new in 5570 thats useful?
Is it worth writing up my experience as tutorial for here? Information seems to be all over the place.
All done with the engine running.
Thanks all for the assistance.

A tutorial with pics would be great if you have them.
5570 is more for stability, just check your Instrument Cluster menu is still present in the CAR button, you'll need vcds or similar to switch this back on if its missing.

Hi slicksurf
I can see you successfully upgraded the mmi from version 0500. Im trying to do the same thing, but I experience some difficulties getting my hands on the 1110 upgrade cd.
Do you now where I can order this CD for the pre-upgrade to 5570?
Thanks in advanced.
Best regards

Hi slicksurf,
I'm in the same position, needing to update my 0500 firmware - I went to the Audi dealer and tried to order the 1110 disk part number 4E0 906 961 H, but they told me that it is the same as 4E0 906 961 E, which I now have. Could you confirm that you got the 4E0 906 961 H disk rather than 4E0 906 961 E?
Thanks.

Ooops, I feel a bit bad, had been so busy I haven't been able to reply.
My order form has the following part numbers listed:-
V4E0 906 961 H (£2.42)
V4L0 998 961 (£5.43)
I didn't quote the V prefix to the part numbers though when I ordered. Hope that helps.
I ordered from what used to be Audi Birmingham by the Blues Ground (Now a Seat Dealership) at their parts desk.

That's annoying - the 961H part didn't come up on their system and ordered 961E for me instead - I've just seen on the German A6 wiki that 961E is for update 0900:
Version 900 - 4E0 906 961 E
Version 1110 - 4E0 906 961 H
I'll give the Audi dealer in Worcester a ring tomorrow to see if they can get it, but I don't rate my chances if Gloucester weren't seeing it.
Out of interest, where did you find out that you needed to go to 1110 before updating to 5570? I wonder whether 0900 will be high enough to apply the follow on updates?
Thanks

So I've just found two conflicting posts on audiforum.us:
I wouldn't do that... ( just for be sure ) But probably there is nothing criminal...
My advice: 500=>1110=>5570(several CD's in box)
Followed by:
As you haven't SDS instal directly 5570 on 0500 and it's good.
I don't have SDS either (just CD changer and phone prep). I have a Dension Gateway 500 which is not working proper, so I plan to remove it, reinstall the Audi phone module, perform the MMI update and reinstall the Gateway to see if it helps.

Remember the US runs on different firmware and different firmware versions to European cars.
The CDs you need are 4L0 998 961

Thanks Chris - I've got the 3 disk set 4L0 998 961 too - you think I can just use this to update straight from 0500? Will it tell me if something needs an intermediate update or just say no updates are available or something else?

What year is your car? 0500 must be near 2004 lol
But doing a google, CD1 of that set updates you to 5150 then run the rest up to 5570
I'm not sure about other intermediate steps (others can answer that), but at the very least you must update to 5150 before 5570. 5150 comes as CD1 in the 5570 upgrade set for this reason.

Yeah - the car is 2004. That's the same page where I got the contradictory advice I posted earlier (from the US site). Do you know what happens if you're not up to date enough to apply a particular version?

I didn't want to take the chance and given how cheap it was, I just though it best to just do the intermediate step. In theory, it should be able to update direct to 5570, but if it fails, and it doesn't have a recovery mode, it could get quite expensive to repair. Its only a one off anyway.

I called Worcester Audi parts this morning and explained about the required disk - they had the same problem with the H version of the disk 'equating' to the E version of 4E0 906 961. The guy was going to check with a technician and call me back. No call.
So, having read so many posts about the procedure, I thought I'd put in the first of the 5570 disks (to go to 5150) and see what it said. I have a Dension Gateway 500 installed (in place of the factory phone module), so I turned that to service mode and started the s/w update procedure. 4 modules were found to update (AMP, disk changer, tuner and MMI) and the MMI reported that it would update from 500 to 5150, so I hit the OK button.
The procedure updated the bootloader and app parts of each module and after about 25 minutes of heart pounding, the first round of updates completed successfully. I re-ran the first disk and it found more updates to do on the MMI - something like data screens(?) - that took a few minutes.
Next was the second disk. I didn't expect t to find any updates since I believe this is all to do with the phone and bluetooth which is on a shelf in the garage!. The third disk to update to 5570 went through pretty swiftly too - maybe another 15 minutes, so I was all done in about 45 minutes!! Result!
So the main reason I wanted to do this update was because I'd had trouble with the Dension cutting off calls after 10 seconds every time. Dension had suggested that I update the car's firmware, but I had never had the guts to do it myself and was on the verge of having it ripped out and a Fiscon unit installed instead. However, I read that the Fiscon unit also required a minimum s/w version in the car, so I was going to have to do it anyway. I connected the phone via bluetooth and made a phone call, and, low and behold it carried on past the 10s mark - no hang up!!!
So all is good - saved myself the best part of £450 by not having to have a Fiscon unit installed and I've got 3D maps on the nav system now!! It's been a good day!!
So, if anyone is wondering about updating from MMI version 0500 straight to 5150 and then 5570 using 4L0 998 961 - I can confirm that it worked for me with the CD changer, Amp, Tuner and MMI modules in place.
Thanks to all for your input and advice.

How do you put Denison in service mode? And is that a necessary step?
