View Full Version : Cheapest way to connect an AUX or iPhone connection

As the title says guys.
I have a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T S Line with a RNS-E and CD changer.

I'm not bothered if the connector charges or not, if AUX is cheaper then i'd go for that. I saw a few on ebay that are only a couple of quid!! But they say the unit MUST have a AUX option, my one doesn't.

Surely if the RNS-E that came with the car had an AUX option, it would mean that there is an AUX port in the car somewhere right, and you wont even need these third party connectors... right? Unless i'm missing something?

Follow this rnseauxin - Audi Retrofit (http://audiretrofit.quinlivan.net/rnseauxin)

I don't think speccing the RNSE made AUX a standard fit but look under the armrest or in it or around that area.

Also if you press CD/TV (or MEDIA) under Source there should be an AUX input.

As above, I have retrofitted the AUX in cable. One thing to note, however, is that the impedance isn't matched between the AUX in and a headphone out. This results in a fairly quiet playback. Turning up the volume works fine until the satnav voice kicks in and deafens you ;-)

I doubt my unit has an aux option, when i press the cd/tv button it cycles through cd changer and sd cards. I dont have any media button. This is my unit, i made this for a shuffle issue i used to have

I'll definitely check properly tomorrow.

Thanks, but they are probably a bit pricey, im looking for a cheap fix ;). Not looking to keep the car long term.

if you do the above retrofit you will need vcds to enable the auxin function.

on your video, when you press mix, hit return and then press the forward button and see what happens

Ive actually fixed the shuffle problem with a software update, is there a way to have an aux connection without using vcds?

Nope - if you have a look at the map in my signature there are a few users with VCDS who could help you out.

So just to confirm, if I enable the Aux feature on my RNS-E, then I can connect cheap connectors such as

Audi A2 A3 A4 TT aux input 3.5mm jack lead car radio iPod MP3 adapter CT29AU04 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A2-A3-A4-TT-aux-input-3-5mm-jack-lead-car-radio-iPod-MP3-adapter-CT29AU04-/221211060142?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item338134e7ae)

Audi A2 A3 A4 A6 A8 TT AUX interface adapter car stereo iPod Concert Symphony | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A2-A3-A4-A6-A8-TT-AUX-interface-adapter-car-stereo-iPod-Concert-Symphony-/221191911114?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item338010b6ca)

Do you know if my unit has a quadlock connection?

Guest 2

None of those will work as the RNSE uses the multimedia plug on the rear

What you need is -

AUX IN Nachrüst Set Audi RNS E Klinke mp3 Player Nootebook iPhone MiniDisk 37898 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121082662390;jsessionid=B356D0381B233EE2CFE54F47A2 0A9587?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.ht ml%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D12108266239 0%26_rdc%3D1)

And yes the RNSE is quadlock.

Hmm, from the description on those listing it seems they should work right? I don't really mind even if I have to take out the cd changer and connect it. Obviously the ones you specified, seems to allow the cd changer to stay in place.

When searching places like ebay, assuming I have enabled the AUX via VCDS, what do I need to be looking for, i.e. what connector type, feature etc so I know it'll work. As the links that I gave first led me to believe they would work?

What about this, it seems to be cheaper and should work right? allanmb has used this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-AUX-IN-IPOD-MP3-A1-A2-A3-A4-A6-TT-Q3-Q5-Q7-RNS-E-RNS-E-2M-CABLE-/130833048720?

The listing describes:

Compatible with quadlock connection head units which has a 32pin grey connector slot
Fits all Audi models with RNS-E sat nav unit
NOT compatible with MMI systems
Aux MUST be available to select before purchasing this lead

This one seems to be a fair bit cheaper too...

The AUX will only work if its wired in through the multimedia plug shown on my link above, it will not work if wired through the quadlock.

That link would've worked (its ended) but it wont give you the fancy little port to place on the dash, just a cable in the glovbox or wherever you want to place it for the device.

As long as any listing shows the multimedia grey plug it will work.

Aha, I was wondering what that black box is, I can't see any holes? I wouldn't even know where or how to secure that box with the car lol. I think i'd be better off with a hanging 3.5 connector rather than that box lol

Hey buddy,

I've sent a guy a message asking to use his VCDS, just waiting on a response, was just wondering, is it an obvious option to enable the AUX feature? Like an on/off in audio settings or something? Or is it more complicated like changing codes etc?

I've found this post for an adapter which i'm hoping to buy, seems a good price:

You definitely need vcds.

Select 56 Radio or 37 Navigation, then press Coding 07 and change the 6th digit to a 5. (0xxxx5x). Once you have commited this change you will need to do a reset of your RNS-e by pressing Radio+Setup simultaneously until the unit restarts. Once the unit is powered back up select CD and under the sources menu you should now have AUX.

Should be 100% George although not sure how it work with the changer already there, could you check the back of your RNSE and see if its plugged into the multimedia plug thing?

Thanks for that Chris :You_Rock_, i'm on sw 0650, that should be fine right?

Kite, if you took it to your armrest, where and how would you mount it? I'm guessing you have to take the panels out and cut holes?

Yep 650 is fine - says in AUX IN Nachrüst Set Audi RNS E Klinke mp3 Player Nootebook iPhone MiniDisk 37898 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121082662390;jsessionid=B356D0381B233EE2CFE54F47A2 0A9587?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.ht ml%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D12108266239 0%26_rdc%3D1&clk_rvr_id=474970274932&afsrc=1)

After fitting the vehicle needs to be coded to AUX-IN
Not suitable for vehicles with factory fitted AMI (Audi music interface)
Not suitable for Radio head units - only for RNS-E
For fitting the head unit has to have a softwareindex of at east 650

Aha i should have seen that!
I'm very keen to buy an adapter, just waiting on a a couple of VCDS users to get back to me. I was just thinking, i have a blank square as per pic, how easy would it be to put that adapter in that space?

Im not willing to start taking different pieces of trim off and get the saw out lol. That square seems like it was made to fit in that spot? Just take out blank and fit into place? Sorry for the terrible pic, was very sunny!

You would need a cable to connect it to the port, these can be bought for a couple of quid. Whether it can be mounted on a blank button, I would like to know.

Sam

You could drill a suitable sized hole in the blank (buy a spare first, just in case!) then use Araldite or similar to glue the socket to the back of the button.

Well to be honest, rather than drilling and glueing, i'd rather just have one of these and leave the cable somewhere which would connect straight to my phone without having to connect another cable to the port

I had this problem in my A3.

If you remove the glovebox (7 or 8 8mm bolts) you can get your hand round the back and give it some assistance by pushing it from the rear ;)

Push the keys in as far as they go then do the above ;)

Oh man that is soo long, I had the glovebox out the other day as well. :zx11:

But even then, the whole unit hasen't even released, it's proper still in there so I dont think pushing it from the back will do anything as none of the keys even slightly unlocked the unit clips. Had they slightly loosened them or unlocked them and I found it difficult to pull out, then possibly that would help. Bloody had to be something.

I'm only going by experience on the A3, shouldn't be too different to the B7.

(I had the BT retrofit done before I fitted my RNSE, hence the lack of it in the pic ;))

Just the top right of the glovebox gap theres more than enough room in there.

I'm not sure the access is as good as yours. I've been watching some rns-e removal videos, when these guys put the key in gently it clicks, mine dont. I just feel so sure that they it wont budge. Will still have to give it a shot I guess but might see if I can find any car audio shops in east london first, maybe they have better quality keys! Need to do it soon though as if I have no luck I will need to refund the cable :(

I've done the coding on Tuesday. If I can get the rns-e out then yes, I will check before putting the unit back in. The guy on ebay who I baught the cable from, he seemed to be sure the cd changer is not connected to the multimedia port, if so then that would be great, if I can get my unit out of course.

Not sure where i'm going to run the cable, I guess tuck it in under the centre console on the sides all the way to the side of my seat and just bring it up under the armrest and leave it in the storage area..?

Hi guys, just like to say that it's all done :o

Yesterday I went to a guy who had an ad on gumtree local to me who fits car audio systems etc. He had a bunch of keys and the keys that he had, two types, opened my RNS-E. I paid him £5 to use his keys.

Basically, it turns out that my keys are sh*t.

On the link below there is a pic of the keys I used. The middle one is mine. The one with the black handle, worked the best, actually clicked so smoothly with no effort. The one on the bottom, it didnt click, but unlocked the unit and I used the black handle ones to pull the unit out as they locked into place. (He only had two black handle ones.)

It also turned out that the cd changer wasn't plugged into the multimedia port after all so happy days!

I fed the wire and got it out a gap near the footrest and hid it underneath the trim and comes out beside me. I'm well happy with it. Wire just stores under the armrest with some other wires.

The only downside is that the 3.5 connector is a little big and didnt fit with a certain case on my iphone. Works fine with another case I have though. I may have to buy a little 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter that has a thin connector to solve this minor problem.

Just want to say thanks for all your help guys especially Chris. :D Kite i'm keen to see how you end up doing it....

Excellent news!

Thanks for keeping us updated - you learn something new everyday, handy to know the changer isn't in the port as I had (wrongly!) suggested ;)

It would be pretty nifty if you could run it under the centre console then out into the little gap under the armrest and keep everything tidy looking ;)

Enjoy your Aux! :)

Retrofit done.
Cable routed behind the climate and under the centre console.
I loosened the armrest and fed the cable between the rest and console.
So now the phone will live in the cubby with cable connected.

No pics.
I pushed the climate forward and loosened the astray to feed the cable as far as the gearstick.
Removed the rear ashtay and pushed a stiff wire through to the gearstick.
Taped both the lead and wire together and using the wire pulled the cable to the back.
Loosened the nut holding the armrest so I was able lift it and tread the cable through.
