A6 - 57 plate 2.7 diesel s-line

Hi,

I have read several times that if this light appears, then a quick "Italian tune-up" is required, as the exhaust filter is bunged up.

However, the light started to shine when we got back into the car after afternoon tea, having traveled about 300 miles non-stop from York to Bodmin (at a reasonable speed!!!!)

Would this indicate that there is a more serious problem?

Any suggestion gratefully received as I have only just had the car a year - and am still finding my way around.

The engine check light and DPF light are two quite different lights - giving the car an Italian tuneup with just the engine check light illuminated could be causing more damage than you think.

Get the car scanned by a diagnostic garage asap - an Audi indy or main dealer would be best.

The engine shaped light is the Engine Malfunction Indicator Light or MIL (or check engine light)

It indicates that something is wrong with the engine, and a fault code has been stored by the engine management system. I'd suggest having a fault code read to see what the problem is.

The DPF light looks more like this:

20406

And that indicates that the car needs a long run to let the DPF clean itself, or if really clogged, taking out and cleaning.

if you can, and are intent on keeping with the VW / Audi breed, it WILL pay to buy a proper VCDS interface.

The diagnostic time you spend will recoup the costs by about the 2nd time you plug the car in ( assuming an average dealer rate of £120/hr ).

The light could be a simple error, however it could also point to something more sinister.

Only way to find out is to plug her in.

You can also buy generic code readers ( but they are poor on code interpretation ), you can also buy clone dealer tools, which are even more powerful.

I've got both & their capabilites are very useful.

If you spend some time reading up, you can do all sorts ( even things like turn off the annoying seat belt chime ! that was worth it for me ! )

HTH :)

Hi

Many thanks to those who responded - my reading of the instruction booklet was flawed (to say the least!!). I did buy a cheap reader to see it would be useful many months ago (but nothing went wrong - typical). Anyway, I went out just now and found two diagnostic sockets (one each side of the dash where the air gets into the door), but neither were the same as my reader socket. However, having taken out the socket plugs and then re-fitted them - the light has gone out!!!!. Can anyone let me know where the reader socket can be found? Boy am I glad I joined this forum.

Many thanks to everyone again.

Bill

Above the throttle pedal, bright pink, can't miss it.

Your cheap one will probably not work.

And one of the the likeliest causes of the "engine shaped light" on the V6 is wear in the swirl flap linkage (search elsewhere!). Now repairable with a linkage kit for about £8 plus labour a side - also mentioned on the form (and not the £600-700 per side for a new inlet manifold that Audi used to (and may still) recommend).

OP any results from the scan?

Hi

Connected the scanner and there were NO faults listed for the engine. Spooky or what???

Presumably that is because it is a cheap cr*p scanner?

If the light comes back on - I will find my nearest local with a "proper" scanner and ask for assistance.

Many thanks for everyone's responses.
