My Golf Match dsg tdi is due for it's first service (only 8k in 18 months on variable service). I know prices vary considerably in different parts of the country but what the sort of price should I be looking for? I've got a choice of dealers within a reasonable distance so there's a possibility of bargaining with them. Thanks.

That seems like funny figures, its due for its first service at 8k in 18 months. Depending how the service interval is set 10k or 1 year (time & distance) which ever comes first or 20k or 2 years (longlife) which ever comes first. Even if your on the 10k service after you've had it serviced and you check the MFD to show the next service time it will only show 9.2k.
As you say prices vary depending where you live just ring around the dealers in your area or a garage you can trust but they must use genuine VW parts to continue the warranty.
Thats if you have any warranty as we don't know anything about you car apart from Golf Match dsg tdi. Why don't you add more details in your signature as you will se alot of regular users do?

LL service is variable, it's not fixed to 20k or 2yrs

Variable service intervals are 'decided' by the car itself using various engine sensor readings that are integrated by the computer system - what sort of trips the car does, the state of the oil, how warm the engine gets, etc. The display is showing that a service is required in 15 days or 600 miles. When you buy a new VW you should be given the option of having fixed service intervals or variable servicing set up on the car. As I've said the car is 18 months old. Our Passat (new in December 2011) is also on variable servicing and shows a first service required in 11k miles - far more than the Golf because its pattern of use is very different.

20k or 2 yrs is the maximum limits for longlife/variable.
Only vehicles that cover 25 miles every day should be on longlife/variable as the oil works correctly then - any less than that it should be set to time and distance.
From experience variable servicing does more harm than good especially on diesel engines and rarely saves the owner any money in the long term - it is just to lure lease companies into buying vehicles.
When new every VW is set to longlife - depending on the use of the vehicle it should be set to the correct schedule on PDI.
