Well, we all know that having a full service history is very important. but if the seller of a car has lost the book, is there any way of finding out what history it's got? I now that any independent services aren't going to be on it, but do VAG have a central database recording the services? Can you just phone them up and ask them for the history?

Or do I just buy the car but get the price reduced for the cost of a oil, cambelt and water pump change?

Just ring customer services and any dealer history will be available over the phone.

For me the service history is everything on a car 100k miles with full history -no problem. But 50k with patchy or no history and I'm not interested. Main dealer history will always be traceable, but specialist, and local garages is harder. If the seller has the details of the garage(s) that's not to bad, as I 'think' they have to keep records for 7 years?? I once went to look at a lexus that was very keenly priced but was sold as 'having lost it's full service history - Lexus confirmed it was full and did me a full print out. I never told the seller and managed to negotiate an even better price. The real bonus was when I got home I discovered the service history book and invoices under/behind the Navigation dvd player in the boot.

I spoke to Audi customer services, who can indeed tell you the dealer history of a car. Some people who answer the phone say that you should call a separate 090 number, but others just read off the history for you. They also said that you can buy an empty service book and then post it to the dealers to stamp it for you.

The problem I'm having at the moment is finding an A6 without rust on the roof, or a Passat without rusty wheel arches.
