The parking brake on my 2006 passat has started to report a fault, it flashes and refuses to release, if I switch off the engine and restart it releases. It has been happening for a couple of months now but recently it's happening every time the car is left for a long period...
I've read that this is likely caused by a faulty parking brake switch. Can anyone tell me where I can buy (online) a replacement switch and if I can switch it without any reset of the car's computer?

Just go to VW they aren't expensive around £23 iirc.

Thanks... picked a new switch up from my local VW dealer this morning for £28 (I got the last one.. the guy said its a very common problem).
Ive fitted the new switch (real easy to do.. anyone looking to do it just google it). The parking brake worked straight away but it took a couple of engine restarts for the dashboard warning lights to disappear, but all seems to be working fine. I'll post an update if i have any further problems.

Unfortunately the problem re-occurred the next morning so switch wasn't the issue. My local garage replaced the o/s caliper a week ago and has been fine ever since.

My 07 B6 EPB (80k) jammed on Boxing Day just as I was about to follow 2 other cars to the pub for lunch. It cleared after a few restarts luckily but did the same again the very next Bank Holiday 1st Jan! Been stuck on the drive ever since. I have just pulled the switch out (having seen how easy it is on YT video*) and was going to buy one either £28 from dealer or £11 on ebay.
But having read your posting I am having a rethink.
My EPB History:
I had the parking brake switch replaced in Nov 2010 (45k)- £92.67!! They fitted the newer type - the 3CO927225C replacing an 3CO927225A (I assume). It had been flipperty since having the car to be honest so it was great to get some confidence back in the EPB.
In Dec 2012 (68k) I had a new O/S parking brake motor assembly replaced as it was found faulty on the service – hadn’t noticed any problems though.
I suppose I need to get it to the dealers if I can release the brakes???
[*Removing the fuse cover to access back of switch isn’t totally simple really as the metal retaining clips for the panel fell out too so looks fiddly to put back]

Update - Gave up. I tried to manually back-off the brakes but no good... no confidence in the small jack with a few paving stones and 2 ton of car above me. Couldn’t get the motor off easily etc..
After 15 days on the drive I called the troops and got it to the garage. My O/S brake released with the switch but the N/S made a noise but wouldn’t release. I drove it out the drive and onto the tow truck dragging the back wheel all the way.
At the VW garage it is clear that this situation never occurs because they had no way of getting the car off with slippery jim style under wheel sliders (readily available about £40 each). We repeated the process of dragging the wheel until we managed to get it onto a piece of wood and then it was easy to park it up.
May as well get it MOT’ed and the cruise control fixed at the same (£££) time.
Watch this space..
