I have a 2.0 TDI 140 BLB recently it has started what I can only describe as hesitating or surging when driving along with the throttle held still, if I accelerate it is fine, any help or ideas would be appreciated

Air intake
Valve timing
Air in fuel
Fuel pump relay
Crank sensor
Cat/Exhaust blocked
You need to get the car scanned the above are some of the things that cause hesitation in a car there's plenty more!

Might be worth checking the egr valve (exhaust gas recycling) as if this get clogged it can cause surging and hesitation, if not this start worrying about the turbo.

This seems to be a common fault as I have the same issue, hesitation at 1500-2000rpm while holding throttle, is fine under acceleration also has black smoke at 3000rpm. Fault code popped up for MAF, I've cleaned MAF and EGR but made no difference, join the conversation here;

Mine was the same ( 2,0 tdi 170 )
Fixed it by changing the vacuum actuator on the inlet manifold. This controls the flaps in the manifold and it has a diagphram inside which splits.
Easy to fix but quite mucky as you may as well clean everything ( egr valve and manifold inside ) while they are off.
parts + new gasgets about £20

I have dismantled my engine for other reasons, but was appauled at what state i found my air intake (http://www.shopzilla.co.uk/rd2?t=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.trotec24.com%2Fen-gb%2Fmachines%2Fgeneral-accessories%2Fflexible-ducts%2Fsp-c-flexible-duct-425-mm-7-6-m.html%3Futm_source%3Dshopzilla%26utm_medium%3Dpor tale%26utm_campaign%3Dshopzilla_uk&mid=212693&catId=13747&atom=11428&prodId=&oid=4384260075&pos=1&bId=18&bidType=1&bAmt=08d896c51a7a8290&cobrand=2&rf=af1&af_assettype_id=10&af_creative_id=6&af_id=11444) system in. This is my link: How To Op Phoenix (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?144815-Op-Phoenix)
Whilst oil in the intake is normal or as designed, its not going to happen by design in my engine again!:aargh4:

Took the car into PSI Tuning today, after they made me wait an hour after i booked it in just to get it plugged in to VCDS the guy comes in and says "yes your right it's the MAF sensor", they then sold me a MAF which i fitted in their car park as it's an exchange part, i paid them and left. Having travelled 1 mile down the road i notice it's still shuddering and black smoke pluming out of the back like's it's over fuelling, so exactly what i was trying to avoid has happened as i've now spend £100 and it's no different.
So did they not plug it in and guessed i was right and just said MAF sensor so they could sell me one or is the VCDS inaccurate, i can see this is going to be one of them where i throw money at random components if VCDS can't diagnose it.

Pop over to me this afternoon and I will scan the car for you. I may have to nip out to collect my daughter at some (as yet undisclosed) point, but otherwise I will be in all afternoon. Let's see what VCDS says and take things from there...
Cheers!

Now fixed, it finally came up with a fault, it was the fue temperature sensor, the wire going to it was that tight that it finally broke completely, now repaired and working fine, thanks for all you're ideas.
