Hi,

I have got a MK5 Golf GT TDI 140BHP which is doing my head in!!!

it drives a treat and every so often the clutch pedal gets a little bit sticky like or the biting point can be really low to the floor but then after a gear change it can be fine for a few more miles. After speaking to a garage they were keen to book it in for a new clutch and flywheel next week. After having a quick look my self tonight after work on the top of the gearbox there is a rubber what looks like a spring i have attached a picture and it looks like its pressed together although the clutch isnt engaged. could this be something to do with my problems? the garage just want to take the gear box out and replace it all which i have no problem with but i can help thinking there just seeing ££££ signs!!

Any ideas would be appreciated or a point in the right direction :)

Thats a rubber boot on the selector cable. can you see the slave or is it concentric slave? is it using brake fluid?

hi mate,

thanks for the reply, could it be something to do with the selector cable or am i well out with that? i think its a concentric slave thats inside the box. and no its not using fluid and theres nothing leaking from on top or around the gearbox?

cheers

the clutch is hydraulic mate you could try bleeding it first or get a second opinion. does the clutch rattle? the cables just move the gear selectors

ok so its not the gear selectors and that was mentioned about having it bleed. then another mechanic in the garage said it needed all new if there was air the brakes and clutch would be funny as they use the same fluid. the car has got 106500 miles on so maybe it is time to bite the bullet and replace the clutch :(

after having another look on top of the gearbox ive just noticed a "hole" in the top of it which i can see moving parts through. It looks perhaps like there should be a rubber grommit in there or something like that. Anybody any ideas?

cheers

There should be a grommet there you take it out when setting the timing

had a smf valeon clutch and flywheel kit fitted which solved my problem but caused me loads more so had that removed today and a sachs dmf and clutch kit fitted with new slave cylinder and its running fantastic.

thanks for all your help :)

Mate, do you mind me asking what you paid for all that as I am having almost identical problems, car has also done 106500 miles, drives lovely but bite point of clutch is right down on the floor. Also difficult to change gear when car is static into 1st or reverse. New clutch needed I reckon but worried about the price!
