Had to do it, after selling my Pioneer unit a couple of years ago because it was VGA and struggled to play video I was looking for something to tick a lot of boxes and found it after 3 days of nearly buying,

The unit I chose is a Sony AV 601BT

Sony XAV-601BT Car CD DVD AV Stereo, XAV601BT Bluetooth iPod iPhone Android (http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/sony-xav601bt-car-cd-dvd-multimedia-av-stereo-usb-bluetooth-61-lcd-android-ipod-iphone-p-35952.html)

This got chosen over a bargain JVC unit as the JVC would need a £40 add on for BT that might not work all that well anyway,

Other considers were the Pioneer smartphone unit but I didn't go with that due to limited memory capacity of the phone and that would mean lots of file swapping,

The Sony ticked all the boxes, @ £299 it's got BT, Removable facia, Mirrolink which doesn't work with my phone but time and upgrading will catch that up eventually, two USB inputs, full phone book etc and variable colour illumination to match the dash, best match in custom I've made is R 10 G 00 B 63 to match the blue of the dash,

Sound quality is very good but not as powerful as the Pioneer was, now for the science, the three reasons I got rid of the Pioneer were as I said the video support and it kept flattening the battery plus I was was always worried about leaving the car anywhere, now to get round the flat battery you need this

Volkswagen Passat, Golf MK5, Polo Steering Wheel Control Stalk Interface Adaptor (http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/volkswagen-passat-golf-mk5-polo-steering-wheel-control-stalk-interface-adaptor-p-15028.html)

This puppy means you don't drain the battery, it also means no messing with handbrake wires as the unit wire pops straight into the green wire on the loom, there is also illumination, pulse, reverse inputs to make other things work as well, plus the unit goes off with the key as well,

Problems?

One bug with the unit, I updated the FW but when you turn off and leave the car you get 3 bleeps to tell you to remove the face and it is annoying tbh, other than that one happy bunny, pics to follow when I get time.

Here's some shots, I've not got the whole lot done yet with it working off the phone, but the Xperia Z is fully compatible with it even though Sony haven't updated their page yet, Galaxy S3 users beware, I tried to get Drivelink app on a mates one and it said not compatible, I'm guessing this is the Jelly Bean update and Samsung not updating the app yet, but you could end up slightly miffed if you bought one hoping the S3 worked.

I know what you mean Chris the pictures make it look like it stands too proud but irl it protrudes only about 2mm and does look nice, it's a cracking unit it plays video without any issues, the only thing I could say it's lacking a bit is the 3D UI but you can switch to 2D where it looks like a row of icon UI instead, wait until I can get some pictures up of the Mirrorlink working, that's the real reason I got it so I could operate the phone from the head unit, the BT is crystal on it.

I'll do one later for you bud, I need to get my camera charged up as the only other one I have is going to feature in the pics to follow and I can't use the camera while the phone is in Mirrorlink mode fully, not the nav side of things anyway.

This may be for sale in a few weeks time if anyone is looking for a nice Mirrorlink DVD player, it's 3 mths old and the receipt doesn't have my name on it so it's covered for another 9 mths if it should go wrong, it'll have a B6 facia, VW can loom so your battery doesn't flatline, cost will be £275 and I'd prefer to fit it myself as it will go as a worker and my interest in it will end as you drive away.

SOLD, went like a hotcake, fitted it for the fella and I thought there was going to be a fight over whose car it was going in once his missus saw it working,

Any of you guys use a good BT unit like Parrot,Motorola etc, i.e an iso connected one tia.

I've just seen it in the Octavia II now he's got the correct facia for it and dunnit look the dogs, it looks way better in the Skoda than it did in the Passat, a more natural Skoda included it at birth sort of look, he's well happy with it, I'm rueing the fact that my new ride couldn't accept it without it making the dash look like a dogs dinner, I miss it it did all the things and more a £1500 manufacturers unit does, plus I got a mobile phone contract I didn't really need for the next 20 mths.

Hi, in the middle of installing the same head unit but having battery drain problems and some odd behaviour. Think it may be my choice of wiring harness as I went for connecs2 CT20VW02 although you would think they wouldn't sell it if it didn't work correctly. The stalk adaptor harness you went for might be a better idea but the reason I went for my original choice was because i dont have a stalk control- will this make a difference. I'd appreciate any help you can offer as I'm going to France in the car next week and don't know the french for 'can i have a jump start'
Thanks, Id appreciate any help you can offer.
