I've covered around 8000 miles and my oil warning light has lit up advising me to top up with no more than 1l of oil! This seems a short time, any advise on this please? Also what is the best oil to use?

Oil consumption is a topic often raised on forums such as these. It is a sad fact that modern engines are prone to using more oil than many of us were previously used to. 1l in 8000 miles is nothing to complain about, indeed Audi would maintain that 1l in 1000miles is perfectly within operating norms (see your driver's handbook). Your car will have been shipped from the factory with a fully synthetic oil designed for the LongLife Service regime. You should use a similar oil to top up, Audi used to give you 1l of oil in a nice bag but they seem to have stopped doing that now but worth checking there is not one in the boot area. The oil is 5w-30 and needs to meet VW Spec 507.00. Most forecourts and places such as halfords stock an oil to this spec. Historically Audi used Castrol but recently have switched to Shell, however as long as it meets 507.00 you will be OK. It is scarily expensive though with Halfords currently selling 1l for 16.99 and 4l for £46.99

Thanks John, really appreciate your quick response. As it happens Audi did supply 1l of Mobil 5w-30 oil which I've topped up so all's good.

Quantum is Castrol Edge... it is just branded for dealers as such... for my first home service (A6 2005 3.0 TDI) I got Belfast Audi to price match this ebay seller Link:- http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/diesel-trader?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

But still better value than others... maybe too much as top up oil maybe TPS or another have litre version of it? depending on price for 1L maybe get the 5L from a seller...
