I have just bought a skoda superb 2 that has a whine between 50 and 60 MPH, sounds like a jet aircraft when taxing.
Have any of you passat owners experienced this and what was the solution, does sound as if its coming from the diff
sound disappears instantly when clutch is depressed at that speed

Sounds like a release bearing, I wouldn't drive it too far until it's checked

Is it speed related or gear related. Can you do the same speed in another gear and still hear the whine? Are you sure it isn't turbo whine?

Its a bit of both, just in 5th and between 50 and 60 MPH
I have read somewhere that the gearbox oil level could be at the wrong level from the factory, and that it should be topped up when its in for a service,
has anyone any info on this???

You can't top up the oil on a 5 speed box but you can drain and refill with the correct amount.
