View Full Version : Missing Economy Gauge?
Hi,
I've just picked up a new (to me!) A6.
It's a 12 plate 2.0 Sline with the colour DIS.
I've seen an economy setting in the colour DIS on a few you tube vids that has the average mpg and instant on the same screen - alongside a 'econo-meter'. It can be seen in this video :
2012 Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro Fuel Consumption - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6uKDmYlDM)
Though its a 3.0 and the display is clearly showing it to be a euro car.
I can't find this on my display - though I am new to the car so perhaps it's just hidden.
Should I have it? Is it part of an option pack I'm missing? Ony on 3.0 cars? Only on Euro spec cars? Perhaps I need a system update?
Not really a big deal. But I quite like it and is probably what I'd have centre cluster most of the time.
Very nice car so far in all other regards though. The automatic handbrake has, in the space of ~50 miles driven so far, become indispensable. Despite my initial reservations over trusting it!
Thanks for any help.

use the button on the right hand side of the left hand side roller to get into the main menu, then go into the on-board computer, then scroll through the options

Hi Chris
I have a Nov 2011 3.0TDI multi S-Line, and on my fuel consumption screen I simply see the average mpg and not the real-time bar graph that your DIS displays. Is this something that could be obtained via an MMI software update?

Unfortunately that C7 was a courtesy car but if you go into the On Board Computer then scroll up and down you should come to it.
Thats the Basic DIS so hopefully the full one has it too.
You can also see how much power an accessory is using such as the heated mirrors, air con, front and rear fogs use if these are turned on.
There are pictures of the DIS spread throughout this thread http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?142091-My-2013-(SE)-A6-Courtesy-Car
Unfortunately, still no joy. Thanks for the tip though I hadn't checked that menu via the steering control.
I've found the other options you mentioned (power breakdown etc) but no sign of the mode I'm looking for.
I don't have the manual (yet) so perhaps just need to wait to dig through it!

That display is standard, although it is only showing instant (the sliding bar) and average mpg (the digits displayed above the bar), there is no econo-meter in the display even if the car is set in Economy mode via the MMI.

Are you sure you have a C7 and not a C6? Based on the date you mention it could be one of the last C6s or one of the first C7s. Easy way to tell is whether you have the MMI display that disappears into the dash when you turn the car off, if it has that then it is a C7, if it has the fixed MMI display then it is a C6. If you have a C7 then there are 3 displays for fuel consumption. The one with the moving bar which shows instant and average journey consumption, then there is a short term memory display which shows all of the data for the current journey (resets after the car has been off for 2 hours) and long term memory display which shows the car data since it was last manually reset by the driver.
Can you let me know the menu traversal options to enable it? i.e which of the DIS options (as similar to screenshots above) should I go into - then how many sub displays I should scroll down to get it?
I don't seem to have it when scrolling through the sub displays of each main DIS option (as screen shotted above).
If it *should* be there then I would suggest it might only be standard in certain software revisions?
I have a sub display option that shows the same information (instant mpg alongside short term average mpg) but it's only in textual format - no sliding bar graphic. This appears for me under the 'efficiency program' option.

Hi John - it's definitely a C7. I'll check the displays again and see if I've missed one!

No problem. This is for the mono DIS (on a June 2012 car) but I assume it is roughly the same for the colour version. All instructions refer to the controls on the LH side of the steering wheel. Use the Left and Right controls arrows to get to the Vehicle Functions display (small image of car at top of display). Press the Submenu button on the wheel (to right of scroll button). Use the scroll wheel to highlight On-Board Computer and press the scroll wheel to select it. Then use the scroll wheel to work through the displays. From the top they are in this order Date, Range, Driving Time, Fuel Consumption (the one you are looking for), Average Speed, Distance Covered, Short Term Memory, Long term Memory. Hope that helps

This is the display I see - which is Current Consumption rather than Fuel Consumption - I think the MMI (or the DIS subsystem if that is separate) has been upgraded / enhanced since my version. I also don't have DAB radio which is why I need to listen to Radio 5 live on medium wave!

At that screen scroll up and down using the left scroll wheel on your steering wheel.

It may be a software version issue as looking in the handbook for my car the description shows the instant and journey fuel consumption as two separate items and not the single view that I get. Perhaps it was a change for MY13 cars? My car has MMI software version RMC_EU_P11474, not sure if the MMI software version affects the DIS display options or if the DIS has its own software

The car I had out was MY2013 and was registered on the 03/01/13.
The MMI software shouldn't affect the DIS. The car I drove had the basic MMI (SD Nav).

This is a great thread, and I have noted the fact that boof doesn't have a manual, so it's easy to understand why he can't find what we all can!!!
Chaps, when you press the menu button, it comes up with the menu that has the four options:
Onboard Computer
Efficiency programme
Cruise Control
Digital Speedo
and if you scroll down with the little wheel under you left thumb, you see 'display darkened'
If you select onboard computer from this list by pushing the wheel in, you get to the onboard computer section - this has about 6 different modes (screens), one of which is the display you are looking for and you change these modes by scrolling with the same little wheel - simples!
When you get it you'll kick yourself!

Hi jbanfie
Could you confirm whether you have the screen I posted an image of in the 6 or so screens within your onboard computer submenu? I'm in the correct section, I see the long-term memory, short-term memory, date, range, etc., but I don't have a screen with the instant fuel consumption graph on it.
Thanks

I do indeed have the Fuel Consumption screen,
The order of the 7 screens is:
Long Term
Short Term
Distance Covered
Average Speed
FUEL CONSUMPTION
Driving Time
Date

If you haven't got the screen, and you would know, then maybe they added it, we know there was a change to the DIS software at somepoint before my car was built in July 2012 as mine has the laptimer and MFGF's doesn't.
When was your car built, have other people also not got that screen? Ask the dealer?
I have to say I use it as my default, and find it very useful!

Interesting you mention range, mine doesn't have a specific screen for range, as this is always displayed in the "Tab" at the top, see the picture.

Range is part of the obc for those of us without the Colour DIS. There clearly has been a change in the DIS software with earlier cars having separate instant fuel and journey average fuel consumption screens (as described in my copy of the handbook) and then later cars (possibly those built post wk22 2012 and thus M13 cars) which have the combined consumption screen which like you I use as the default

My screens in the on-board computer submenu are as follows:
Date
Fuel range
Driving time
Fuel consumption (only shows textual average mpg for this journey)
Average speed
Distance covered
Current consumption (again only textual, as per my image upload earlier)
Short-term memory
Long-term memory
My car was registered in Nov 2011, but I'm unsure of the build date. I do believe that the DIS software has been updated on models since my car was built, which is what led me to ask the question as to whether that was something that could be upgraded via an MMI software update, or whether the DIS was a separate system which simply includes the functionality that it had when it was built, and not upgradeable via a software update.
I'll ask the dealer the next time I'm in.
Thanks.

Thanks - but I'm still missing it. My average display only shows the numerical average in 'large print'. No graph.
It sounds like this has been confirmed by others.
There must be a change in the DIS display then at some point? Or will this depend on other options in the car I wonder...?
My car is a March 2012 car (registered anyway, not sure on build date).
I may ask supplying dealer if there is an update.
Similar to this I was surprised my car only has rotary air con controls - all the screenshots and videos I've seen have a digital temperature display. Probably a discussion for another thread though, I seem to have stirred enough up with this one ;)
Thanks all so far though. Sad I don't have the readout but happy I've not been stupid and missed something too obvious :)

The digital aircon was an optional extra :)
The 2013 SE I had on loan had the system you're describing.

Ah really? Thanks - that's useful to know.
Any functional difference other than having a digital readout? I wonder if the digital panel can just be 'snapped in' to replace / upgrade easily.
Sounds like there's quite a lot more to the digital air con than just the panel. Oh well!

When I bought our car it had the older display on it some of you are talking about, but after an update during the "problems" I can confirm it now has the same as jbanfie's display. So I am guessing it's upgradeable as mine seems to have been.

The air con option with digital displays is the 4 zone version, so each rear passenger can select their own temperature (either via the main control panel or via their own controls on the rear of the centre console), they also get 2 12v outlets rather than the single one fitted in the rear as standard. The 4-zone system also provides a Sync option to allow all temps to be synced to that selected by the driver and additional outlets on the rear of the B-Pillars. Consensus seems to be that it is not possible to retro fit the 4-zone system to a car with the 2-zone system, and if it were possible it would cost silly money

Do you happen to know what was updated to bring it about?
The MMI as a whole ot the DIS specifically?
Any words I can feed the dealer to point them in the right direction would be great!

Think it was the MMI generally as we had tyre pressure reset warnings when it came back from the dealer, and I'm guessing that came from a reset of some sort to the whole system?
All very strange.
I took delivery of my C7 in Jan 2012, so build period would have been 4Q11. And yet I have the same displays as jbanfie and others have mentioned.
So it would appear it's not a recent upgrade or add-on to the DIS firmware.

Got ours in April 2012 and it had the older display, but it now has the new one. So even though the dates don't really match up with your theory, it's definitely been subjected to an upgrade on mine. Through VCDS we couldn't enable a lap timer though, which apparently was "odd".
It could be conceivable that, if it's the firmware in the DIS as opposed to the MMI as a whole, it just depends on the parts bin lucky dip on what revision you have in your car.
If you haven't got the screen, and you would know, then maybe they added it, we know there was a change to the DIS software at somepoint before my car was built in July 2012 as mine has the laptimer and MFGF's doesn't.

Mine has that screen, and my car was built on 26/01/2012. I strongly suspect it's tied in to the software revision of the instrument cluster. This can be updated, though, from what Wuffles has posted. The trick will be in persuading your dealer it can be done :)
Cheers!

If it's described differently in the manual, then you have a case to get it sorted, perhaps we could list out versions of the owners manual on here as a reference for second hand buyers, my manuals are dated with the word Englisch on - don't know what that is!
Keep in mind, my car is an A7, so:
Audi A7 Sportback / S7 Sportback - Englisch - 05.2012
MMI Navigation System Plus - Englisch - 11.2011
Having just read the manual, it actually describes earlier display that the chaps want rid of, and not the fancy one that I actually have!!!!! It talks about the Average Fuel Consumption and Current Fuel consumption as different modes.
Then under the section for the Cylinder on Demand on the S7 4.0 TFSI it puts a picture of the graph thing in.
Most of the pictures are in German
The manual is basically useless with regard to this issue!
