Although the car starts on a cold morning, it doesn't start first time and I get a decent old cloud of light smoke out of the exhaust when it does! Generally starts after second turn over.. I'm hoping glow-plug but knowing these cars it won't be that obvious! Also, power steering whines during low speed manoevering and steering just feels generally heavy..

The poor starting could be down to a CTS, a scan should show if its working corectly. Have you checked the tension on the drive belt, checked the power steering fluid level? Also check your drive belt tensioner and alternator pulley. Poor starting from cold is usually the CTS cheap and easy to replace.

Rez mate, do a search either using google or on Ebay......coolant temp sensor Audi etc and they'll pop up for you.

A genuine one may be around £15 - £20 or so from the dealer at a guess and around £6 off Ebay.......most people recomend genuine although I fitted an Ebay one to my wifes VW Passat 6 months or more ago and have had no issues.

Most people go genuine because they're so cheap. I buy genuine also because you get a retaining clip that will break or disappear if you don't have a spare! Always starts but never first time in the cold. First time evertime after that though.. Smoke is a slight worry.I always give her a few blasts on the glo-plugs but never seems to help!
