So it's that time... car is now 4yrs old and Cambelt is recommended.

I've had the following quote, from Pioneer (VW Specialist in Cheltenham) Pioneer :: Independant Audi - VW - SEAT - Skoda - BMW Specialists (http://www.pioneer-service-centre.co.uk/)

Longlife service - 239.00 inc VAT
Timing belt with water pump - 399.00 inc VAT
DSG Oil change- 150.00 inc VAT
If you decided to have all of this work carried out at once I would be happy to do a discount of 100.00 giving you a total of 688.00 inc VAT

So, my question is, do I need the waterpump doing?

And are these prices about right? I've also asked my local VW dealer to quote for the work as well....I'm expecting them to be twice the price :biglaugh: but who knows!

(Car is a 58plate 2.0 Common Rail Passat Highline Estate DSG)

I bought my Passat at just over 3 years, and had this bundle of fun 10 months later too!

I don't think it was an awful lot less without the water pump, and it went on to do another 30k without a problem..
It's something to do with plastic vs metal impeller I believe, there are threads on here about this.

The price seems reasonable for a VW specialist - I paid around the same at VW though, and got a 2 year guarantee on the parts and work.

VW didn't even mention the water pump, I guess they thought if it was bad design/build, they'd have to pay for it!

What is your mileage and how many miles do you cover per year ?

If your having the timing belt replaced it is a false economy not to change the water pump also.

I'm sure that at some point Martin will pop up and quote the official VW schedule, which IIRC says the CR engine has no time limit for the cambelt. Mileage was quite high as well. Do a forum search and you'll find the detail somewhere.

At the 4 year service for my CR Passat the grasping dealer didn't even mark up the sign in sheet as "cam belt due" as they had for my Golf and the wife's Eos.

As for the DSG oil change, £150 isn't a surprise 'cos it's a specialist job, not like draining an old fashioned auto box and pouring a couple of litres of the red stuff in. Mileage is 40k and it would be short sighted not to have it done. But there is no time requirement.

So.............. make sure you're not spending unnecessary money.
