View Full Version : MAF...missing a wire?
Audi a4 1.9tdi avf
When cold starting the rev needle jumps around 1000rpm before settling to 850rpm.
Also the car only does 40mpg at a steady 70mph on the motorway as before could easily get 50+.
Same with local driving, have lost about 15+mpg than before.
Decided to clean the Maf but im a bit puzzled, is there a resistor wire missing here?

I would not condemn the Maf, the winter diesel contains kerosene to stop it from gelling, as a consequence it does not have the same BTU content as summer diesel. 1000rm's iddle for a short while from a cold start is normal, is the ecu dumping a little more fuel to aid warming the engine quicker. There are only 4 pins used in the MAF, only the v6 tdi uses the whole wires as it contains extra components...
Ok... What do you clean on the sensor if the wire isn't there in the first place?
What would make the ecu dump more fuel? maybe the coolant temp sensor?
something is definitely wrong with the very poor fuel economy
There's nothing missing from the outside,to clean the meter look inside the meter and you will see some stainless prong and a flat piece, you can try cleaning with some thing like nail polish remover,or any solvent that wont leave a residue, however if your vehicle is idling erratically usually its a sign of a failing meter, also poor mpg also,so give it a clean sometimes it works.
Thanks
Will give it a clean and see how it goes .
Today started from cold (white smoke) and ran very sluggish and only averaging 20mpg

Clean it in a freezer bag with the MAF immersed in Isopropal (Maplins) giving a it good shake to free any oily residue from the internals. Do not attempt to clean the inner ceramic part with a cotton bud as it will break it.
