View Full Version : Driver's door central locking doesn't work

Just got my first Audi yesterday - an '02 A4 1.9 TDI (130). One of the niggly issues I need to fix is the driver's door not working with the central locking (either from the remote or the central locking switch inside the car). All the other doors lock from the remote and the central locking switch. The drivers door and all the other doors lock when you turn the key in the door. It's the same situation with unlocking the door.
I know this is a common problem and I done a search before posting this, but I couldn't find any threads with the info I needed. The previous owner told me that the wiring loom to the drivers door was replaced before, as was the controller for the electric window in the drivers door. The central locking was apparently working fine after this was all done and the issue with the driver's door locking only appeared recently.
What I need to know is: Where is the first place to check the wires for breaks etc and how do I access the wiring inside the door? Is there anything else worth trying? I can't imagine that a blown fuse or anything would cause JUST the drivers door not to lock/unlock, but I guess it's worth a try.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if anyone knows of an existing thread that has the info I need, feel free to post a link to this thread, rather than repeating the information.
Thanks in advance.

i just had my door apart today because of broken wires in the rubber boot between the door and the body of the car. the rubber boot comes off easily and you can pull it back towards the door and check the wires, i found 3 broken. to repair them i took the door card off and removed the speaker, then you can unclip the wiring loom and pull them through to repair the damaged.
hope this helps

Do all the lights on teh door light up correctly? Does the windo work? I had this issue and nothing worked - turned out to be the ground cable in the rubber boot in the door.

@ Quattro Fan - Are there instructions anywhere online on how to take the door card off and access the wiring behind it?
Everything else works on the drivers door - window controls (for both front windows), mirror controls etc. it's just the lock on the drivers door that's causing the issue.

To take off the door card is easy. Pop the cover off under the doorle and remove the screws. Remove the screws from the bottom of the door, and pop the trim (aluminium in my car) and there are screws under there. Then the card is on poppers. Just pop it offf and you in the door.

ther is a video on youtube of a guy in the US replacing a window regulator, search for AUDI A4 WINDOW REGULATOR, the guy is doing the job on the passenger door of a B6 A4. there you can see exactly how the door card comes off.

also if you just google audi a4 door card removal, and door wiring plug there are a few threads with pictures on other forums. try this one.

Happy days. I had found one for a B7, but couldn't find any for the B6, so this is useful. Hopefully it's dry after work this evening so I can try to get it fixed.

good luck man, only took me 1.5hrs to take it apart fix it, put it all back together. just dont forget to reconnect the door handle cable, as i did, most anoying. and leave the window up as it makes it easier to get to the wiring behind the speaker.

Went to start to check the wiring just after work there, but the rubber boot over the wiring between the body & door has sealant on it, so I only got to start cutting through the sealant before coming in for my dinner there. I will continue after dinner, but won't get a chance to take the inside door panel etc off tonight, so I'm hoping I'll find the problem in the wiring between the body & door.
Does anyone happen to know what colour the wire is that would control the central locking to the door? This would make life a lot easier :-)

Ok, I found a wire that's not attached to anything. Problem is it looks like whoever repaired these cables before covered them all with the same colour sheeth. However, it looks like this unattached cable is purple underneath. Hopefully that's the wire that's causing the lack of central locking to the door. Other problem is that I can't tell where in the connector that this purple wire should attach to. I've been searching for pics of the connector that attaches from the door to the body to see where the purple wire goes, but can't find any clear pics. Does anyone have a good clear picture of this connector and the wires that go to it?

I've managed to make the problem worse. The driver's window now won't go down, but I can still control the passenger window from the drivers door. Any ideas what could be causing that fault? Would it be to do with the same wires?
I'm going to have to get an auto spark to have a look at the car now :-(

hey man, before you call auto elec. check out these two posts below. also when you removed it you may have disturbed the prevoius repair. best to pull the door card off and pull the wiring through, to check all wires. looks like a real weak spot on these cars. check it out. good luck!!

Ok, I think my best bet is to to buy a good condition wiring loom from a breakers yard (if I can source one) and replace it myself. The problem I face doing this though is that I think whoever fixed this problem before has hard wired 2 of the wires from the wiring inside the car to the wiring loom. I don't know how I will manage to get round this.

how did they do that? did they drill an extra hole in the car bodywork or something?
sounds a bit strange to me, as the weak point seems to be in the boot between door and car?

They drilled a hole in the lower part of the plug where there are no other wires and routed the cables through that.

Anyone any idea why the drivers window would have stopped working, yet I can still open the passenger side window from the control on the drivers door?

All sorted. Auto spark just cut out the connectors and hardwired it all together. Really neat job too. He had it done in an hour and everything works perfectly, including the electric windows etc. Well chuffed to have it all working now :-D
