What exactly do you need it to display?

well i was thinking that it should be telling me the suggested time till next service, as i dont have a service book or any confirmed history. I dont know really, just thought as the button was there to display something it should at least tell me something!! :-)

You say it shows __,__ and time until next service. That would indicate a fixed service interval. Unless the wait is quite short give her a service. On a diesel I do an oil service 5-7 K, its cheap to do and keeps the engine sweet. For in-depth info on the state of the car you need a VCDS scan, there's a members with VCDS map on the site and on Chris the administrators signature.

not quite sure i follow, so are you saying it now needs a service? i think i will get it scanned next week as my mate has a garage and im sure acess to the required equipment. the dealer i bought it from told me they had done the oil and filter, but i think i should do it just for peace of mind. when i get it scanned and seviced will it reset the sevice indicator or will it just stay _,__ ? thanks for your help man.

I thought you said it showed a time until next service? There is a spanner appears in the mileage display when a service is due, however like Tesco my preference is 3 for 2 that is, Service, oil change Service. Depending on the settings of the car ie fixed or long life you have to reset the service indicator with VCDS or a magic wand depending on your preferences

right, I see!! no there is no time and no miles till next service, they both say _,__ . so i will organise the sevices, get the scan and reset and then all will be happy days!! and no spanner is showing to indicate a sevice due, but i think a sevice is the way to go, reset with a scan, start enjoying that 4wd drift in this lovely british winter. thanks man.

The display will show exactly what you are seeing just after it is reset, do a hundred or so miles and it will come up with the distance and time to next service. Unless you know it has been serviced VERY recently I suspect the previous owner reset it just before he/she sold it to you to stop it flashing up that a service was needed.....

As GeorgeE says - might be more than a hundred though, mine seems to take heading towards 500 miles before it comes up with a reading of how many miles left to go, but I'm on variable. Give it 500 miles and see what it says. Then, unless you got it from a garage and it was serviced before you got it, or you have history paperwork - I'd assume it's just been re-set by the previous owner and it's taken it onto time/distance. At that point I'd also assume it hasn't been serviced, and would get at least an oil/filter change done ASAP. Not sure if National still have their killer deal on and you could perhaps use that if there's one near you - or if you fancy doing yourself the bits aren't expensive....if you get in quick you can get them from EuroCarParts before their Christmas Sale finishes if you are going DIY?

10,000-300/=9000 - so either it goes up from there to make it 10k miles, or you are on variable, and your last 300 miles have been stop/start dawdling miles?

Cheers,
Dan.

yea that sounds about right, my miles have been stop/start miles. filters look new, and oil is reasoably clean, so looks like it may have been serviced before i got it so should be all good. Thanks, Sean.
