Hey guys in new here want to say hello, from sunny glasgow.

I have the chance at buying a 2001 (facelift) audi a4 1.9 tdi Really! cheap, but its not taxed and tested and has some issues. Im not clued up on the audi engine so thought id look here for some advice.

Buyer tells me its lay up since september when tax ran out. Said last time he drove it, was driving at 70 on the motorway and car cut out. pulled off car started again and drove home. The car then kinda struggled to pass 2500rpm. (im presuming limp mode) and had not drove it since, upon inspection i have been told he thinks the turbo is gone. he has no mechanical knowledge but has spoken to someone who thinks this could be the prob. I test drove the car last night an drove absolutely fine. no loud noises knocks bangs or anything, no smoke after letting it heat up and drove for ten mins.

There was a little oil coming out the exhaust when i felt the tail pipe, after my suspicions of the turbo being gone. ( At first thought oil seals on the exhaust side? ) how much would this cost to fix approx? I am planning to do all the wrench work. But all depends one what could possibly e wrong as to whether it takes me a small amount of time or longer period of time.

Seeing as you guys are in the know, could you possibly shed some light into what could be the potential problem? and how much of a money pit I may be falling into lol. On a plus note it is a stunning looking car and really looking to playing with it to fettle more power from the 1.9 diesel.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Nick

oh yeah am i right in saying this is an avf engine?

thanks

Oil in the exhaust and a suspect turbo, means you may have a turbo on its way out.

Google VNT actuators, for the limp mode (normally without the engine management light) and Mr Muscle turbo cleaning.
Check the inlet and outlet of the turbo for oil - your 'oil' in the exhaust may not be oil.
If there is oil on the inlet/outlet, then your seals are on the way out. Another turbo is the best fix - send yours away for fix or replacement.

I'm a 2.5 man, but the 1.9 guys seem to be happy enough with the engine.

You will need VCDS (I would recommend genuine) for the car though if you're looking to do much work on it yourself.

Start with a fault code read, print and clear then drive it again and later do another code read. See what comes up and compare it to the original and then deal with the faults logged on the second read.

Thanks I have a friend who has the app for his phone so think thats the plan im going to buy it and do the diagnostics.. sorry im totally new to ecu stuff im a classic car guy, our daily just now is a mk1 golf cab. so simple fuel injections is as far as my technical gets lol..

thanks for the comments guys.

what would you value a car in this state with no tax or mot? just wonder if im getting a good deal cars in good shape with bigger alloys and the audi bodykit. etc.. i can post pics if that helps.

I would not trust the results from any of these apps and such, only a VAG or VCDS code read, its up to you. An early 8E dead with problems could be a money pit or a simple fix and good find, without seeing it, it is impossible to say as one fault could make the difference between good and bad. A dead turbo could be £900 to put right and a few faults with the front suspension with discs and pads all round plus needing a cam belt make the car worth nothing. If it is low ish mileage and the paint is good, then it could be worth £2k.
