What are the thoughts regarding using fuel additives? Are they safe to use? (Talking about Redex etc)

I've always used a pint of petrol to half a tank of diesel about once a month, cheap and wonderful.

This http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-69366-millers-oils-eclipse-diesel-fuel-additive.aspx is the only additive I have ever used in the A6...and only because I needed to raise the cetane level to prevent gelling when I went to the Czech Republic in February (down to -26C). Once I was there I used their 'winter diesel'. The additive is supposed to increase fuel economy and clean the fuel system. Did it make a difference?? To be frank, I didn't use it long enough to notice. Still have it and will use again for the same reason in February next year.

I used to use double doses of Millers additive which seemed to improve things slightly. Now I just use Shell V Power. I used Redex in previous cars and didn't really notice any difference.
