View Full Version : Sport mode from economy / dynamic

Hi All,
Economy mode obviously makes the auto change gear early keeping the revs low (which I like most of the time) and also remaps the throttle response so you need to press the accelerator further to get the same acceleration as you would in other modes. What is a pain is that it limits the max throttle so if you put your foot down in economy you won't get full power - this is ok for me 95% of the time but if you need to overtake you want max power. I was just wondering if pulling the gear lever back to put it in sport mode (from economy) would give you the same acceleration as putting it in sport mode while in dynamic?
Has anyone done any 0-60 tests to check this? I think it is probably just as quick but it would be good to know for sure.
The throttle pedal has a neat trick - if you get to what you think is the end of the travel, then press harder (against added spring pressure), it will depress a little further and give you full power even in Efficiency mode.
Cheers!

That would be ideal if it did do that, however on mine it definitely doesn't give full power even if the "kickdown" switch is activated on the throttle.
According to the handbook, the "kickdown" feature at the base of the pedal travel is "designed to give maximum acceleration". If your car still limits power during kickdown, it sounds like there is something wrong with it.

I think other posters have mentioned they don't get full acceleration in efficiency mode - some even saying it is dangerously slow. The revs don't go as high when you plant your foot in efficiency and it certainly feels a lot slower. I'm about 80% sure switching to sport in efficiency gives you full power and the same acceleration as you would get in dynamic switched to sport. I'll try and quantify this with some 0-60 times when the roads dry out.

I agree with the lack of full acceleration being potentially dangerous. It seems like you need to press the pedal a long way down just to increase your speed by 5-10 mph (especially at motorway speeds) - it seems not to translate the driver's desire into driving action, if you see what I mean. If I know I need to overtake on a single carriageway, I'll always pull the gear selector into sports -- then the car seems to do what you want it to (i.e. go faster, quickly!)

opening myself to criticism here, but generally you should be able to know in advance when you plan to want full power so it cant really be dangerously slow as you can change mode. If you need full power unexpectedly chances are the brake pedal and not doing whatever you were about to do would be much more effective. (unless you pull out from a jcn and only then see the truck approaching behind......)
I realise when swapping drivers there cold be confusion as per other post.
I am sure mine feels like full power on kickdown in econ but I haven't driven in economy for ages. Makes no difference on motorway, and i suspect is econ harder on the brakes when approaching roundabouts etc as it leavings changing down to the very last second.
Economy is awful IMO. I tend to just use comfort or auto and on the odd occasion I'll pull back on the stick for Sport. Since having it mapped it's got enough torque that I don't really need the more agressive gearing. (I still wish I had the 3.0 version!)
