Hi All,:1zhelp:

I'm new to the forum and hope I can benefit from that wealth of knowledge out there!!

I have a 2002, A4 TDi 130 Sport.

Recently the temp gauge on the dashboard has began to play up, sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesnt!!! However when the ignition is switched on it does move very slightly.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be !!!!

Morning & welcome! Temp guages like all the instruments are electrically operated so there's going to be 1 of 4 reasons for this problem:
1. Temp sender unit is bust
2. Temp guage is bust
3. A dodgy connection
4. Broken wiring.

More often than not it'll be option 1 or 3. To test this, find the temp sensor sender unit, disconnect the plug, clean it & plug it back in. If still no luck disconnect the plug again & bridge the connections, you should get a deflection of the temp guage on the dash, if you dont then your looking at a guage or wiring problem in the dash, if you do then the sender is shot & you need a new one. 9 times out of 10 its a connection or failed sender so dont start worrying yet!

Where is the temp sender unit located so I can have a look!!

I have the same problem. Mine will sit at 90c when the ignintion is switched off. It will twitch and move when the ingnition is switched on. It does work from time to time. I replaced the temp sender to no avail. I think Audi have a problem with temp gauges.... so many are faulty. Every forum is peppered with temp gauge issues.

Try the sender it may work. It's located behind the engine. I have a picture of it attached. ;) It's the bit circled in red, although it doesn't look overly obvious on the smaller pic.. sory. You can see the unit with 4 wires coming from it.

I replaced this on my 2001 A4 1.9 TDI (new shape).

You can gain alot lot more access to this part by removing the black air intake (two screws), alot easier than trying to get your hand straight down the back of the engine block (like I did).

If you have the new sensor to hand you can often replace them without losing too much coolant, but get some for topping up before you do the job.

A scan with vag-com should show a code if it is the temp sender.
