Hi Folks

I think most of us LT35 owners know of the engine noise caused by the vacuum pump pushrod however what I'd like to know is if replacing the pushrod cures the noise?

I've just replaced the rocker cover gasket and while the cover was off I had a cursory glance at the camshaft. Now given that the engine has done 200,000 miles all appears good with very little wear shown on the cam lobes and only minor pitting on the vacuum pump lobe. So is it worth replacing the pushrod in an attempt to quieten the noise or would I be wasting my time and money?

My dad's LT used do this after about 100K on the clock... when you give it some rev's the noise stops... usually occurs more at idle...

The push rod is only £30... we never got round to sorting it as near about 135K miles big end/crank went :(

If you want any PDF's or P/N PM an external email...

Hi Boisty, for what its worth, mine still tapping at 400,000 plus miles now and again, it started around down the 120,000 mile mark, engine still as came out of factrory only things changed from new has been oil, filters, belts, etc and a new clutch, still starts first time and runs happly at 60-70 all day, the buck stops with you in the end wheather your happy with spending money to see if it stops but only to find it comes back later, from what i was told by a vw mechanic its the rod sticking slightly some times so there is a small gap between cam and rod.

one i look after was tapping like a goodun. i undid the vacuum pipe and gave it a squirt of oil and it stopped. that was 3 years ago at least and it still doesn't tap, so if and when it starts again i will give it another shot of oil.

Hi Magnus

The vacuum pump is seen on the rh side of the engine when veiwing from the front and is situated along the centre of the engine just under the injector pipes and directly under the throttle body. There is only one pipe to remove.

I found the following link quite interesting although I haven't gone to this extent.

Thank you!

I hope this helps on mine to. My sound has more bass, hope you understand, than the one in the video. But it might be the microphone not picking up the sounds.

By the way, what kind of oil did you use?
Real thick oil or something like WD40?

I just used WD40 and it seemed to do the trick. Good luck!

Just did quick test but it didn't help. My engine is shaking a bit, to me it seem as the idle rpm is ~100-150 rpm too low.

See this video I recorded today.

Any ideas?

The sound and vibration on mine was located to the vibration damper mounted on the crankshaft at the front of the engine.
The rubber was all torn apart.
Replaced with a new and runs fine.
