Hi all,

I'm just stripping and cleaning an 01E for my project and I'd really like to remove the flanges (using the single hex socket at the centre). Is there anything I need to be wary of (such as the trick some manufacturers did by supporting the diff using the shaft bearings so when you pull them out the diff falls into the casing) or can I just whip them out, replace the seals and move on with my life?

Are you on about the inner flanges like when changing oil seals or what ? You can take the driveshafts off without problems, they don't fall off the box...diff is also ok but i never took both flanges at once so i cannot tell if the shafts hold the diff in place or not ! If in doubt do one at a time !!!

How dare you come up with a logical option! :) I will just do one at a time.

Yes, those are the flanges of which I speak - I've got the shafts off no probs.

The flanges are easy to get out drain the oil first the seals are easy to change too when you have the box out, harder to do whilst lying on gravel on a dark wet Saturday evening...
