Hi guys.
The cooling fan on the front of the engine, should this be free wheeling or solid(bolted tight) turning with engine constantly.
With the engine off i can rotate mine slightly by hand.
Just wondering if its a thermostatic fan or not.
Thanks for any help.

It's a viscous fan, Its easily turned when the engine is cold harder to turn when the engine is hot

Thanks Doctle Odd.
When the engine is cold its very stiff to turn by hand. Its had a new fan fitted before i bought it.
Could this be why it only reaches 75 C as its constantly turning from cold with the engine.
My other posts suggests a U/S stat..

Get someone to scan her with VCDS that will check coolant temp sensor etc. The fan should be easy turned when the engine is cold

Ive replaced the (green) temp sensor already. Before it wasnt even budging on the gauge. now it gets to 75C after about 7 miles at 30-40 mph

Ok so it's the stat these babies heat quickly enough. When you try to turn the fan does the pulley turn as well?

UPDATE.
Ive checked fan with a cold engine. The fan spins very easy,so fan is ok.Stat stuck open.
It pains me to take all the front end off+belts(pay someone)when the belts an water pump are 11,000miles old.I think a remote stat until the belts are due an then revert back to an original stat is what i will do.Other people on here have done it an all is working fine.
Thanks for everyones help..
