Strange problem(s)
Started a couple of nights back when I noticed a slight crunch on downshifting to 3rd...no sign of crunching on upshift and no crunching from other gears - immediately thought lazy synchro - I was a bit suprised how quickly it happened (no sign of it in terms of resistance or being able to "beat the synchro")

Then within the same journey (circa 25 mile round trip) it started crunching on upshifts and became harder to engage (though a blip of the throttle helped)
I resigned myself to driving around the problem until funds allowed a replacement in the new year...sadly this was not to be.

On a small <10 mile trip yesterday I was waiting in traffic and when I went to grab second after pulling away it was like all other gears had gone...gearstick was virtually solid once out of first, not like being in neutral, no gears selectable other than 1st and no grinding...it was like the stick couldn't move.
Drove to a friends in 1st (luckily very close) and having got there found all gears were selectable again (but still the dodgy synchro on 3rd)

Upshot is, I obviously can't rely on it in that state, so its parked up awaiting further investigation...but I'm now resigned to finding a secondhand gearbox.
Being an early A4 it's fitted with a 1z engine, are gearboxes specific to this engine? As far as I know it's a non-DMF clutch and so far I'm not having any luck finding a box for it.

Really don't wanna scrap the old gal, just been MOT'd and has a youthful 146k on the clock...other than this nightmare shes always been brilliant.
Any advice greatfully recieved...

Engine code AHU AHH box from A4 or B5 Passat will fit. Probably the box from the higher BHP engines would bolt on but the gearing would be a bit off. Is there any oil in your gearbox?

Is there any oil in your gearbox?

Thats a good question, gonna check that asap...tho as far as I know there is no dipstick, just a fill hole.
I'm guessing even if it is low that the damage is done now?

I think Audi 80 box would fit too. its worth draining the oil out of it see whats in it

Engine code AHU AHH box from A4 or B5 Passat will fit.

Is this definite? Sorry for asking, but I've dropped myself in it so many times in the past with parts that looked like they'd fit.
Would be brilliant if it is the case, cos it seems like there's a lot more boxes around for those 2 engine codes than my old 1Z.
Thanks again.

Gonna drain the oil out on Sunday and see whats occurring in there...hoping its a nice hex to undo the bolt and not one of them weird spidery things...
In my dreams it'll be low on oil and a nice refill with fresh oil will make everything hunky-dory again...yeah, right :)

The 1Z engine pretty much is the AHU so no problems bolting on the box. To be sure you could ask zollaf or crusher they're experts. Yes its a hex on the bung no dipstick juts fill until it overflows, hopefully that'll fix it. If it has loads of swarf save the new oil for the new box

Cheers fella.
Trying to find out which gearbox code was used on the AHU engines.
Seems my 1z is likely to be CPC (will hopefully find out when I get underneath it this afternoon) and they're like hens teeth.
