Parking brake failure!

I just pulled up to work this morning and as soon as I put the parking brake on I got a message saying there was a problem - the parking brake lights are now flashing constantly.

Does anyone know of any usual causes for this and the likely costs to sort it out?

Could be anything, it needs a fault code read first.

Yes, I've got it booked in for next week - I just wanted to get an idea of any common faults. A bit more info (if it helps), the parking brake actually appears to function and it engages and releases ok.

Possibly just a temperamental switch if the car is pre 2010 model year.
