View Full Version : Question Replace clutch or CLutch and Flywheel? 2000 TDI

Hello people.
I have a lovely 2000 reg A4 TDI (B5)
I have noticed that the clutch is on its way out and i am thinking about getting a new clutch.
Do i need to repalce the Flywheel at the same time? The car has 150k on clock and has no evidence of either being chaged at any time.
I have also heard about companies that resurface Flywheels. Is this a good idea or shall i just replace it?
What make and type of both clutch and Flywheel should i be looking to buy? There are so many different makes and types i just dont know.
Any help would be really appreciated.

You don't need to change the flywheel with the clutch, no. If you want to invest £340ish quid now to get it done anyway, it might be an idea if it's possible. You'd hate to get a few months down the line & develop dmf issues & then have to shell out the £340 and pay for hours of labour on top. Some may say you're doing well getting 150,000 miles on the original dmf anyway. So it's basically £300 now to avoid paying £500 later (potentially.
I can't advise on the resurfacing, I've never heard of it, but I shall be buying new. The oem dmf & clutch are from LUK by the way. Try saving a little money on parts by sourcing yourself from carparts4less. You may get them cheaper there than your mechanic, just a thought.

Is it similar to the way that if you are changing a cambelt, you may as well change the water pump for good measure as its going to take the same time to get to it if it does go?
So you are saying it should be ok, but best to do it to save money down the line if it was to go?

Yes, precisely. Only difference being the water pump & dmf being massively different costs. They always recommend replacing the clutch when doing the dmf anyway, as the clutch is the cheaper of the two, and it means if the clutch goes later, you'll end up paying double labour costs if you replace them separately.
