I have noticed the temperature never seems rise above 60º that much. Only had the car for a week so not had that much experience of it. I also have two Alfa Romeo's that do the very same and they are renowned for thermostat failures.
The heater however seems to get very warm unlike that in my Alfa's which leads me to think it may be the sensor. I have read a few threads on here and it seems the sensor is the easiest to do but the thermostat the most likely.

I think it was a 1.8 I read where you had to remove the bumper to get to it? Is that the case with the 1.6 too? Price is not an issue but effort is so any knowledge would be helpful. I also have a bluetooth OBDII connector I use on one of my Alfa's along with FiatECUscan which coincidently can be used with VAGcom leads. I also use it to monitor various stuff with an app on my phone and wondered whether the 97 1.6 A4 I have is OBDII compliant? I suspect not as my other 97 Alfa ain't.
