recently bought a audi a4 with a 96 plate 1.8 saloon, its in need of some tlc i recently purchased the front suspension kit to change it, was going to change the front brake discs and pads,
this is where my problem is what type do i have, i have been advise that they had 2 types on this car Lucas or ATE, it has solid discs i have included a picture can anyone advise what brakes this is

looks to be ATE, if there are 'ears' each end of the pad it is ATE. Sometimes the antisqueal backing on the pad has a cutaway section, this pad needs to go against the piston and makes the pads 'sided'

ATE lucas has different guide pins and no spring

Hi there,
I'm certainly not saying the guys above are wrong but I thought it was the other way round, that the Lucas Girling calipers were the ones with the springs. I was recently tempted to change my calipers (which are the same as yours) for some reconditioned ones and the company I spoke with said I definitely had Girling calipers when I described them with the spring. Always thought it was pads for Girling calipers that I've got when I've replaced mine as well.
Your best bet to be sure is to take the old pads out, get a friend to give you a lift to your motor factors and take the pads with you, then you can compare new with old.
