I know this must be on the forum somewhere but I've scanned around for a while now and can't find it so here goes.

the old question of resetting the service indicator on the dash. I have the a6 4.2 1999 auto model and when I've tried the usual reset method of ignition on, hold in right button in etc it doesn't work. As its the auto the dash shows the "press foot brake "etc message and doesn't ever get to the "service" bit.

I was wondering if there was a different method for an auto ?

sorry if this questions been asked loads of times but if someone can just clear this up for me that'll be great.

try holding in the button before turning the ignition on

It should say how to do it in the owner's manual, but from Gendan (http://www.gendan.co.uk/article_6.html#audi_a6_1996):

Audi A3 (1996-1999), A4 (1994-2001), A6 (1996-2000)

If the service is due on these vehicles, when the key is turned to position 2, one of the dashboard displays will show "Service INSP", "INSP1" or "INSP2" for Fixed interval services, and "SERVICE OEL / OIL" for the Oil Service interval.

The oil service reset procedure is as follows:

Start with the ignition turned OFF
Press and hold the button on the right side of the display while turning the ignition on (position 2)
"Service OEL / OIL" should be displayed
Release the button on the right
Pull out the button on the left side of the display until the service prompt is cleared
The display should now read ---
Release the button on the left


...then to access and reset the service information:

Push the button on the right briefly
"Service INSP" should show on the dash
Pull out the button on the left side of the display until the service prompt is cleared
The display should now read ---
Release the button on the left
Turn off the ignition


Or, do it in Vag-Com.
